code Whisperer article in July hemispheres
I was looking at this article and reading about all of the advances to the united website. Is this article referencing a soon to be released site or the existing site?

The article is referencing the (delayed) new site. In fact, the photograph printed with the article captures a good bit of the flight search function. Looks similar to AA in that restricted, flexible, full and premium fares are displayed concurrently with each flight option, along with amenity icons like DL.
I am interested to see how the expert mode and search-by-fare-basis functionality translates to the new website. If those two features are lost, then I don't care how slick the new 'flat' site looks, it will be a negative for me.

I'll be very frustrated if ANY functionality is lost, and slightly disappointed if no new features are included (or at least fix the broken features today such as the SDC pricing hitch works fine on the app).

So, the site must be pretty near roll out if they are writing columns about it? Seems a bit odd to not deploy the site and along with the column though.

100% agreed. There are so many comments I read on FT that complain about the site looking old, having an ugly design, or whatever. It worries me that people think this way, because UA might think that way too. When it comes to an airline website, functionality is 99.5% of the experience and design is 0.5%.

I like the current UA site's functionality and simplicity. Please keep it the same and just fix the bugs in the programs.

I think lead times for magazines are 2-4 months, so the initial target might have been July 1, but the piece was already written, formatted, typeset, printed, etc.?

Indeed, the number one news site has the most primitive design with no graphics, and has remained unchanged for over 18 years. It has only text lines for the links and typically a few photos among the dozens of text lines. Yet, it is the most visited and effective site on the web.
