Spotted today: UA cabin crew playing piano for tips at ORD C-17?

I saw something different today while on the C concourse at ORD. Near C-17 there is a bar with a piano. I've sometimes seen what I assumed was a professional musician playing this piano. At other times I saw the piano playing itself, in automated mode.

But today, I saw a gentleman dressed in UA steward's crew uniform playing the piano. And I think I saw a bowl with some cash on the piano, although I didn't stop to examine the scene that closely.

Has anyone else seen UA crew playing piano at ORD? Is this new? What do FTers think of such a display of talent?

I have seen a United pilot playing that piano more than once. He's very good but I did not see a tip jar present during his impromptu concerts.

Since Jeff is ripping out IFE from so many planes, I'll take the entertainment where I can get it. More power to them.

Was it American or Continental that once had piano bar installed on its widebody aircraft? Perhaps this is channeling that spirit?

I really hope the money was going toward a charity.

As I recall, several airlines had this in the upper deck of the 747-100.

Unproven allegation. Let's not fan the rumor flames here. This thread is exceptionally misleading .. if not intentionally inflammatory.

I'm apparently not the only FTer to have seen UA crew playing piano at C-17.

I didn't mean to mislead, nor inflame. I've adjusted the title accordingly.

Maybe PanAm? But this was a long time ago - maybe in the 70's?

I'm willing to give the employee the benefit of the doubt on this one. If there was a tip bowl, maybe that was meant for an employee welfare fund or to help other employees in crisis. I know there's been an FT event in the past that benefits a fund for UA employees in need.

I'm not insulted. Speculate away! It's an FT tradition.

Responding to speculation and unconfirmed rumors are a waste of everyone's time!
