Getting started with United
Hi all, I am completely inexperienced in FF programs but I have lately started to accumulate URs on my Chase that can be transferred to UA. I am wondering if the most effective way to obtain United status as a casual traveler. As mentioned I am building up miles with CCs and I enjoy international travel. I wish to go back to Asia (Japan/China) as well as visiting Turkey/Greece. Being based in NY obviously this is a decent chunk of flying, but I am wondering if I should structure my travel in a specific way to maximize miles earned in the most cost effective way. For the long haul international flights is it possible to buy the base ticket and then use the miles to upgrade, while still receiving the miles for traveling? The international flights in coach are just brutal. Other flights I have planned at the moment are NY to LAX. Would another airline program be better? It seems like United covers most the destinations I wish to visit. Thank you.

You will find insanely diverse opinions here. But of note - many of us are frequent flyers, which brings in different math here, especially after today's announcement.
It all depends what you want from the airline.
But in your specific situation (tons of earnings from Chase) UA makes sense, but take a look at DL and AA or even VX (while it lasts) for NY-Lax.

First read today's announcement http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...ification.html
Second, For where you wish to travel, UA is probably as good or better than others.
third, Yes on upgraded travel you do continue to earn miles based on the original purchased fare.
Fourth, plan on educating yourself and a great place to do that is to become a regular reader. You can not learn/adsorb everything in a few simple steps. The way to maximize your experience is to learn the rules and then learn how to apply the rules best for your particular desired outcome. Learn how to use the rules to maximize your personal experience. There is not single template.
have fun, safe travels.
