Hong Kong Award Travel Advice Needed
My plans are to fly United from BDL-EWR-HKG round trip Jan. 5, 2014 to Feb. 6, 2014 using award travel one way only because my mileage balance is only about 75,000.
It may be possible to get the award ticket for 32,500 miles. If not, then 65,000 miles. Either way my account doesn't have enough miles for an award ticket for both ways.
I want to fly the return on award travel because the cost one way from Hong Kong is much higher than the one way cost from BDL.
I would sure appreciate any advice you can give me about issues that may arise by booking my return ticket before my outgoing ticket.

I find it hard to believe that far out you have to buy a standard award!!!
The roundtrip should be 65000 miles. Period.
There are dozens of routings available via YYZ, or via Atlantic.

Does UA open seats for rewards as dates get closer and seats unsold?
Thanks

To be a bit less flippant, yes UA may release more inventory closer to travel -- but HKG-USA premium cabin awards has always been tough.

Can't speak for other gateways, but EWR-HKG is a VERY popular route.
But there are lots of partners that fly into HKG, not all of whom show up on UA.com.

Yes, there are good options on Asiana via ICN but prefer a direct flight TPAC if possible. AC flights ex YYZ and YVR aren't even showing.

I know you want to go TPAC, but I would encourage you not to ignore LH as a possibility either. You may find decent availability in business, depending on the routing.
