When you lose something, it isn't theft. You lost it. Maybe someone took it, maybe not. You don't know. The correct response from the police is "take care of your stuff better" and then go catch criminals.

My automatic reaction would be to look around and say "anybody lose a pen" and give it to the FA if nobody spoke up.

However, situations like this are why travel insurance through one's credit card or "personal items insurance" through one's regular insurance exist. I *insist* on wearing an expensive Breitling on my travels because it's my watch. I'm not going to switch to a cheap watch just because I'm going out in public. So far it's been on my wrist since 1997 without problem.

democratization here applies to ease of access to J or F now a days. just look at how difficult it is to get an upgrade.

You are correct. Wait till someone comes up with " unjust windfall" !

IAH-SCL: Lost iPad became stolen iPad

Just a warning to everyone: If you forget something on the plane, you might not get it back.

About two weeks ago, on an IAH-SCL flight, I forgot my iPad in the seat pocket in front of me. I didn't realize it was missing until the day after the flight, and I filed a report with United. I assumed that it was just lost, and that being wedged in between magazines, it probably hadn't been found yet, or had maybe made the return trip back up to the US.

Despite my hostel's bad internet, I managed to set up Find my iPhone to display my contact information and to notify me when the iPad was located.

Lo-and-behold, it was traced to a residential-looking building in Santiago. Ever since instructions for its return were shown, the iPad has stayed turned off.

This leads me to believe that the iPad was stolen. Not lost.

While I know that United can't be held liable for carryon items, this is a big disappointment to me. Calling customer service garnered zero sympathy. I guess I was naive in expecting that lost items would be returned to lost and found.

So word to the wise: Be careful not to forget your carryon items on the plane. You might not get them back.

Did you at least wipe it and lock it when you saw it on find my iPhone?

What did you expect UA CSR to do? Mount a raid on the apartment building?

Lost items may be returned to lost and found; stolen items won't be!

It depends. I've left my phone and my IPad on the plane, and in both cases, got it back - because it was found by a crew member.

Probably does not mean definitely, but I suspect you're in the minority.

This happened to me with my iPhone last February. I stepped onto the jet bridge and immediately realized i left my phone on the seat. Someone swiped it in that 30 seconds. This was IAH-CUN.

I am probably the master of losing things on planes. I have lost an iPad, a MacBook, and Bose QC headsets. The most impressive loss was the MacBook, where I left it on the plane and went back onto the plane 10 minutes later while the cleaning crew was still there. It was gone for good.

My expectation is always that things left behind will not turn up, although I have had some occasions where they did.

In general I have noticed that airline, hotel, and rental car lost and found procedures are very poor. Once in a while you get a surprise, but it's an exception.

As I recall, UA, after numerous complaints about left behind items never showing up, ran a sting operation at IAD last year and terminated a large portion of the cleaning crews based on the outcome.

Does this mean that the iPad is effectively a brick, or is there a way to reset it after you have locked it remotely ? I have this set-up on all my Apple devices, but have thankfully never had to use it.

I've only lost one Iphone in my travels. Left it in a Hertz car at MSP. Realised it at terminal, turned around, already gone. Financially it ended well, though.

Tough to expect minimum wage people the temptation !

Points_Maniac, hope your insurance does not skyrocket !
I find hotels better at L& F as before any other guest checks in, housekeeping is involved, time and person easily IDed ....on airplane, a pax just takes advantage of the "lucky" opportunity :(

west_end_NYC Mar 20, 2015 1:38 pm

Just had a surprisingly good outcome with a lost iPad I left behind in the 2E seat back pocket on a LAX-HNL flight on 3/16.

I didn't realize I de-planed without it until I was getting ready to board my HNL-KOA flight from the HA inter island terminal so had no time to run back to the UA gate area. I called the Premier line and they directed me to fill out a lost and found form on united.com which I did immediately. At this point, I figured I had a 1 in 100 chance of ever seeing that iPad again.

Shockingly, at around 10am the very next morning I received a call from a HNL based CSR that my iPad had been found and was available to be shipped back to me. Apparently UA has partnered with 'Chargerback' to coordinate this. After speaking with the CSR, received an email with a link to set up the shipping. All-in paid $11.50 for Priority USPS delivery and my iPad has arrived back at my home in NYC as I write this from the Big Island.

Not sure if this amazingly fast response had anything to do with status or class of service on my flight, but this definitely ranks up there as one of my most positive experiences with UA.
