Question Single GPU required for same-day turn?

I wasn't sure where to search for this question, so I'm posing it to the forum. I've got an upcoming MR to SYD (LAX-SFO-SYD-LAX) with a same day turn. I applied a GPU to this trip and immediately cleared the LAX-SFO and SYD-LAX legs.

Based on past experience, I found it odd that only 1 GPU was required for the whole res. Is this how things work now? (I've been out of the game for a while and may have missed this as a part of "changes I think you'll like"). Is it also odd that the option to buy-up to C is not available online?

Thanks!

The itin will be treated as a o/w so long as you don't break the upgrade cert with an extended layover or backtrack through the reverse segments.

Ok, thanks. I thought that might be the case as I've seen that on trips where the turn was same-day...was just concerned about SHARES figuring out the dateline

Surely you're not serious.

I tried to file for missing miles credit earlier this year 15 days and 1 hour after flight time. The rep I spoke to said the computer wouldn't allow the request to go through since it wasn't 15 days yet in Chicago. The flights was in Asia.

Thanks!
This was a great surprise for me also with a recent EWR-HNL MR and only using 1 RPU for the whole trip. I was planning on using 2.

how do you get this to apply?

I have a same day turn to icn but had to apply two gpu's. Routing is boi-sfo-icn-sfo-den. The tpac outbound was r0 but return had r6. I applied one to the outbound confirmed waitlist. I applied the other to return, unaware of this thread, and confirmed instantly. Is it because I have an open jaw with another destination on the end? Not trying to fd just need to end up in third location. Tia.

You cannot backtrack - needs to be more of a circle trip.

If instead you had BOI-DEN-NRT-ICN-SFO-BOI, it would work..

OP's itinerary is a loop. Yours backtracks through ICN-SFO. I think the computer figures it out that your itinerary is not one way.

I do not think UA will look at this as one way - this is clearly a r/t and it will be treated that way.

Even if you chose to do the upgrade using United website, it will see that these are 2 one ways or a r/t.

Depends on the routing.. having a non-backtracking circle trip with short stopovers is a well known loophole for using one instrument to upgrade the entire length.

That was the case even back in the day of e500s when I would fly SEA-PDX-SFO-PHL-IAD-SEA and upgrade everything but SEA-PDX for 1 e500.

Wow I did not know you could do this. One GPU for a trip that gets you there and back? That's not bad. I wonder if there are itineraries like this originating from HNL.

Here's hoping the OP's SFO-SYD segment also clears.

Remember that it has to be a same day turn...

Or at least within 12hrs (or is it <24?) for a GPU or 4hrs for an RPU, so you could come in one night and leave early the next morning.
