Even if you chose to do the upgrade using United website, it will see that these are 2 one ways or a r/t.
Depends on the routing.. having a non-backtracking circle trip with short stopovers is a well known loophole for using one instrument to upgrade the entire length.
That was the case even back in the day of e500s when I would fly SEA-PDX-SFO-PHL-IAD-SEA and upgrade everything but SEA-PDX for 1 e500.
