Upgrade/MP problem on Through Flight
I flew AUS to SAN last week via DEN. Even though I switched aircraft in DEN, the flight number was the same. I did not get an upgrade from AUS to DEN, so the result was that I was not even placed on the upgrade list from DEN to SAN. I noticed this the night before, and spent about 15 minutes on the phone with a rep. They said they would address it. By the time I arrived in Denver, it still wasn't addressed, so I spoke to the people at the United Club there. They couldn't figure it out, so they called another agent. I then spoke with the gate agent who also happened to be a supervisor. She said based on my platinum status I should've been upgraded, because she had just upgraded a gold a few minutes earlier at the gate. She said United knew there was a problem with "through flights," but they had not yet come up with a fix. She said to call 1800 We Care 2. I thought good luck with that.
When I arrived home, I noticed that I only got credit for one flight segment instead of the two I flew. Also the mileage for which I was given credit was way low. The Mileage Plus people said they were sorry, they knew about this glitch also, but they don't know if it happens until someone complains. Further, they said I would only get one elite qualifying point even though I was on two separate flights, again because the two separate flights shared the same flight number.
This is frustatrating. Anybody else have this happen?

Tricking the single flight #, multiple segment penalty
My travel agent hosed me next week on a flight from the west coast that now has me on a double connection. I know if I'm booked on a flight that has the same flight number but multiple segments I only get credit for the direct flight distance, despite flying an extra 600+ miles. If I get upgraded on one segment but not the other would that force the system to credit me for the flights separately? If not I might SDC for the next flight since it's only an hour and a half later.

I'd personally be worried you'll have issues upgrading at all when booked on the direct flight #. This is unfortunately one of the ways the new UA has regressed, since PMUA had finally fixed direct flight credits a couple of years back.

Call and ask them to split it. They always have for me when asked to. And, as I understand it, policy is that they are supposed to do it.
I will also say that my IAD-(NRT)-SIN flown last weekend managed to split itself at some point. Dunno exactly how that happened but I was quite happy it did.

Just had this happen
This happened to me tonight. On FLT 460 SNA-SFO-YVR. Saw last night that I was not on the list for the SFO-YVR leg. Didn't clear UG SNA-SFO, but now I'm in 12D and there is an extra seat in F. FA says gate agent chooses who gets it. Gate agent says SHARES wont let her assign it to me so I can't have it. GS representative was working in the UA Lounge at SFO and confirmed this, and said there was no way to fix it.
I called the elite desk and in the limited English that the rep spoke, she informed me that my flight was from SNA-YVR and that it did not stop at SFO - which was quite amusing but not very helpful.

Again, just another problem that UA knows about but has no idea how to fix. Half these things that we assume UA is trying to screw us or cut our benefits with are really nothing more then UA not being able to control its own computer. I honestly believe UA would fix these things if they had any idea how......it's very sad that they don't

, I mean 5 minutes. I thought everything took 10x as long...
