As long as the seat belt can secure it, it is legal.

At the gate area:

"Please come to the counter, Mr Bo Ling. Mr Bo Ling, if you are in the gate area, please come see a service representive at the counter."

Looks like Mr Ling got fingered for an upgrade.

That makes sense. If it falls out of overhead it could be insanely dangerous.

But like others said, couldn't it be checked? Unless the owner of the bowling ball was Jesus there's no reason for it to have a seat on an airplane in any class.

The OP should have realized that something like this could happen when he heard them paging "Passenger Lebowski, please come to the podium."

Hopefully he/she can take advantage of the new GloBALL Entry perk for 1K's. That will make it nice and easy to roll straight through CBP when arriving stateside from int'l travel.

I assume the lesson to be learned here, when on the upgrade waitlist, make sure you keep your eye on the ball.

I used to do that all the time with my carryon (usually a laptop backpack), but a couple of years ago, a very nice UA FA was doing a final check before landing stopped and told me that he thought what I did was a good idea, but that it was against the safety rules, so I unhooked the seatbelt and slipped the bag back down underneath the seat in front of me. My opinion is that the bag would be less likely to go flying anywhere in an emergency if it were strapped in. He and I had chatted pleasantly throughout the flight and I didn't get the sense that he was making up rules.

Are you referring to cellos/guitars or SWUs?
