I'd book the nonstop without hesitation. Lots of people come to this board to complain when something goes wrong with their flight... and it does happen. But there's also the thousands of UA flights per day that go off without a hitch. Odds are in your favor that your flight will be among these..especially since it's just a single nonstop. And if it will put you in a higher elite tier on AC then that's all the more reason to do it.
United cancelled 1,044 flights in the 30 days ending on Tuesday (July 17). That is more than four times the cancellations (235) racked up by Delta Air Lines in the same 30-day period and more than twice the 499 cancellations recorded by American.

Perhaps, but the numbers aren't good, and they're getting worse month after month. Here's some interesting news (have a back-up plan):
