Cert expire if flight is cancelled
Might be worth mentioning:
Used a $200 cert on a IAD-LAX flight 3 months ago. Flight was cancelled. Tried to re-use the cert for another flight, was told it was already redeemed and I only have the value of the ticket minus the cert value. Total value was $297 so only had $297 left. Cert no longer valid because it was already redeemed. Tried to explain to the 1k agent that the flight was cancelled due to mechanical failure and it's not fair that I can't re-use the certificate that was given to me. After 2 hours on the phone of back and forth between agent and supervisor, they still wouldn't do anything about it. Emailing customer care to fight it and try to get my cert back. Anyone had a similar issue? |

If they cancel the flight on you I cannot see how they are not obligated to fully refund what you've paid. The difference between voluntary and involuntary changes should be readily apparent.

That is exactly what UA if offering him/her. The problem with these certs is that they are not treated as payment towards the full ticket price but the discount on the base fare. So the poster is getting back everything they payed but they will not automatically return the cert.
The only way to get something back is to email customer care and explain the situation but it is up to their discretion I was told. |
I used a $400 e-cert no problem several weeks ago. YMMV?

Is it still the case that you can combine an e-cert and VDB (Type B) vouchers?
I have a $250 e-certificate (S*PMO/WEBDOLLAR) as well as 4x$100 VDB vouchers. Both were issued pre-3/3 In the past I believe you had to apply to the e-cert online, hold the reservation and then call in to have the hold time extended to either mail in the VDB vouchers or ticket at the airport. My experience this morning; I built my itinerary online using the $250 e-cert (no problem using the 1016 code), put the reservation on hold and called in, but the agent said under the 'new policy" they could only use one type per reservation and could either ticket using the $250 certificate or build me a new reservation using the $400 but I could not use both. What are others' experiences? As I understand it, the VDB vouchers are effectively cash and can be used with one form of discount coupon....? Help appreciated. Thanks GroundStop |

That's what they are telling me. Since the cert was already redeemed, I cannot get it back. Regardless if the flight actually happened or not.

What additional perks?

When the base fare was < e-cert amount on pmUA, you simply had to call web support. They knew how to set the base fare to 0 and just charge you for any applicable taxes/fees. I don't know if the process has changed, but I'd suggest calling them first in the future.
I haven't had any problems using e-certs since the merger, and the e-certs now come with additional perks that didn't exist on pmUA. Also, e-certs issued by UA in the past do not come with a PIN number. Furthermore, you have to enter the e-cert number at the flight search page, NOT the payment page. That's probably the most common mistake people are making when trying to redeem e-certs, thinking they aren't working, and then getting frustrated by trying to book over the phone. |
Data point:
I was just able to use my $200 ecert. I had tried a million times to redeem it on a fare >$200 using Google Chrome as my browser, no luck. Booked in IE (x86, NOT the 64-bit version) and it processed fine. So perhaps switch browsers for the booking if you are getting error messages Good luck! |

Hi there, what additional perks do the new ecerts have. Just curious, I have only used PMUA 1016 certs.. Thanks and Safe Travels
2. now reduces taxes on the base fare as well, making the certs worth more than face value (+7.5% I think based on typical ticket taxes, although I haven't bothered to calculate exactly) |
Very nice..

What certificates are you talking about that are valid on international travel? Cash value certs for say $100 given from the appreciation website are valid for travel within US, to Canada, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands....
The % off cert IS valid for international travel. Or are there different types of theses certificates? |
Another frustrating situation is not being able to use gift certificates in conjunction with E-certificates. One or the other, not both. So stupid.

I had a $100 e-cert someone one send me to "make up" for one of the screw ups I dealt with so I tried to use it the other day. Nothing but problems. First it would not take it, then it would take and it wanted to know which pax to apply it, then it would not apply to me so I tried to apply it to my wife and it gave the credit to both of us...but of course it had not ticketed by the next day because it now saw the error....then I decided to change our travel days by one day since we were still inside the 24 hour window of the original booking. That took a phone call to PM reservations and the nice lady there said "the easiest way to do it is just cancel the old res because it never ticketed and make a new res and the e-cert would be release and could be re-used...Not quite right. She did cancel the original res because I could not because it was not ticketed but when I went back online to make the new res it would not take the e-cert. Why? Because it had been used. After 45 minutes on the phone with another res agent I finally told her, when I was not on hold waiting, that I had to get on the road and she could call me later with the result. Finally about 2 hours later she did call and told me they finally had the new res in the ticketing que......and it did ticket correctly the following day. No, they don't really get that it is not working right....but we get E+ seating and booking...oh for the old days when this was easy to do.

Once a cert is redeemed it can't be used again. I have had excellent responses from 1K Customer Care in situations concerning replacement of certs. When your flight was cancelled, didn't they offer to rebook it for a later time?
All the later flights were either full or also cancelled. Since I was going for a one night event, the next day flight was not going to work. I asked to be rebooked for the next week, they said I would need to call and do that so they had to cancel the ticket. Once I called, I lost the value of the voucher. I emailed the customer care rep who issued it several months ago to see if there is anything she can do, still haven't heard back, will post an update once I do. |
