What's a good upsell price for LHR-ORD?
Debating on buying an upgrade to business for an upcoming flight LHR-ORD.
I've seen this get as low as $689 - has anyone seen it go lower? This is for a flight tomorrow with 13 seats open in 1st and 6 on upgrade list. Will airport check in kiosk be cheaper tomorrow, or inquiring at the gate? I'd love to upgrade this flight, but this is slightly outside of the realm I would pay. I have Silver status if that matters. A friend of mine on the same flight with no status was offered $829 to buy up. Any advice appreciated! |
That's reasonably good based on my experiences (LHR based).
What fare class? |
Not sure I've ever seen anything under $8XX to or from LHR, so your 689 will likely be the cheapest.

I'm booked in H right now.

EWR-HNL $599 T class at T-24. Maybe should've taken it, since 5 seats were open (P4) at T-24 and then all gone by T-22. Forgot my RPU is not very good in January.

Checked in for 1/22 BOS-DEN and the buy-up was $1619 (G fare originally). I almost hit accept because I was laughing too hard to keep my hand straight.
Went back at T-3 hours to change seats as a non-middle finally opened up in E+. The offer dropped to $199. Took it. |

Seems consistent with my experiences for H class - If you want the experience - take it
I was trying real hard to justify an upgrade, then I thought "I'll just use miles" - miles were 20K/$425 and I was Ok with that. If you value miles at $0.015, it was slightly more expensive than the cash upgrade, but I typically fly WN for leisure so I figure I'd use the miles for an upgrade. Call in to process the upgrade, and then they told,be about the exLHR AD tax increase for another $89.80, bringing the upgrade to 20K/$514.80. No thanks. At that point, the miles were practically worthless, when considering I could have went all in for $689 cash and kept 20K miles. What is interesting is I called in a couple of times to see if the price had went lower and was told different things each time - like cash upgrade earned more PQM/PQD, then the next agent told me no. Another agent said they can't do cash upgrades unless it's a re-ticket, when another agent told me the cash upgrade price of $689. Finally, the gate agent said that the $689 would be Exclusiveof the $889.80 tax, bringing the total higher. Either way, I'm writing this in Y+ with a total of 23 in Y and 10+ empty seats in C. Not a bad flight if you don't have anyone next to you. Now United just needs to retire the 767-300 on this route, or at least bring the amenities out of the Stone Age. |
SFO-HNL L-class, $309 Y-F on B777 2-class
HNL-SFO L-class, $279 Y-F on B777 2-class Original fare is $ 565 r/t. Offered at booking to non MP pax, travel end of March |
ORD-CLE T fare UA Gold, with an RPU waitlisted since November
T-24, ExpertMode shows 4 all the way across First... OLCI offered me $99 upgrade |
SFOSTL
E175 $199 upgrade to A from S at T-24 No way I was going to get the CPU, so took it. Curious for the return since I am on a Y fare what will happen. |
CLT-ORD. $89.
Tempted cause it's a 6:40 a.m. flight and I'll be going straight to the office, but declined. |
LAS-LAX - $89
IAH-IAD- $179 Accepted the latter. Booked in P. Coming after a redeye..needed the 764 flatbeds to catch a nap. |
Okay, I am used the normal idiocy of UA's buy-up offers, but this one takes the cake.
SFO-SAN tomorrow on a U fare. I could upfare to P right now for $97. When I checked in, it offered me the upgrade for $99, which is already a rip-off, since it doesn't change fare basis. But went to look at SDC options, and it is now offering me the opportunity to buy-up for . . . [drum roll] . . . $969. Sheer idiocy. |
They are good at idiocy....that said, I booked one way for two of us EWR to LAS on July 12,fare was $151, once purchased the buy up offer was $249 each. Tempting but I passed for now. I will buy a sandwich on the way to the airport, I know we will be traveling light so no need for the extra baggage allowance.
