UA Upsell Offers to Business/First at Purchase and Day of Departure (TOD) [Archive]

Since in the other threads it is virtually impossible to collect concrete information, I thought I might start this thread in the hopes that we can keep the content pertinent to the discussion. If you or your traveling companion have been offered a TOD upgrade, please post all of the following information:

  • Flight (including date and city pairs)
  • Status of individual offered the upgrade (1K, Platinum, etc.)
  • Fare class of the person being offered the upgrade (G, K, M, or the full fare code)
  • Upgrade cost
  • If you declined the buy-up, did your CPU (or other upgrade) clear? Or, if you had a non-status companion get a buy-up, did your CPU clear?

If you have an explanation for the buy-up offer (eg. "a $129 buy-up from K to M for the M-up looks about right because of x"), then post that, but please voluntarily refrain from any commentary or other discussion ... there are a million other threads for that. The goal here is to collect specific cases where this is happening, find an explanation for the ones where we can, and report the ones where there isn't a reasonable explanation to UA Insider for investigation.

Edit: For those who are not familiar, "TOD" is is short-hand for "ten-of-dollars" and is used to describe buy-up offers that seem to take priority over elites on the upgrade waitlist but are offered for much less money than a paid upgrade to a confirmed first class ticket should cost. The primary complaints are related to buy-up offers from economy to business, economy to first, and business to first, so those offers are the focus of this thread. You're welcome to post any unusual or irregular E- to E+ offers; however, I don't know of any documented problems there (except for people being required to pay when they shouldn't be).

Jadenus has created a Google Spreadsheet that anyone can contribute to here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...G5pUkI0UHJxZmc

... I'll be copying details from this thread to that spreadsheet, but feel free to add to that yourself.

Flights: March 9 Flight 1209 (AUS->IAH) connecting to flight 1162 (IAH->SEA). Note that 1162 is a 757 that continues to ANC...
Passenger Status: 1K
Fare class of the person being offered the upgrade: H / H
Upgrade cost: believe it was $129. Was definitely below $200 and ended in a "9".

Upgrade never cleared on either segment. On the long leg I was #6 on the "did not upgrade" list, and sat next to another 1K that said she ended up #11. On the short leg I didn't really care/check.

I called the 1K desk a couple of times the previous evening & morning of the fight (both after OLCI) and was told there was nothing they could do, nor could they check status of those ahead of me on the waitlist. (Obviously they "can" but I can believe it would be impractically laborious for them to do so.)

I don't know if this will help, but I've compiled the data so far into a Google Docs spreadsheet. It's editable, so new info can be put into it. Sykes, if you like it, you're more than welcome to put the link into the first post for greater visibility.

Correct. I don't know of any documented problems with E- -> E+ upgrades, although if anyone sees anything that appears to be out of sorts, I think that this is still an appropriate place to post it.

Thanks! I'll add it to the first post--it's a great idea.

I also got an email notification that someone posted asking what "TOD" stands for, but that post appears to have been removed now. I'll clarify in the OP, but for anyone that doesn't know, TOD is short-hand for "ten-of-dollars" and is used to describe buy-up offers that seem to take priority over elites on the upgrade waitlist but are offered for much less money than a paid upgrade to a confirmed first class ticket should cost.

I was offered $59 to upgrade from E- to E+ on a DCA-ORD tomorrow morning and think that's highway robbery, thought I'm not sure that's out of sorts per se.

UA3441, March 12, ORD-HPN
1K passenger

UA 3444, March 9, HPN-ORD
1k passenger with non-status companion (PNR separated at OLCI)

1k passenger with non-status companion (PNR separated at OLCI)
T fare
Offered $99 u/g at OLCI
Turned it down, did not get upgraded.

Neither of the HPN flights can be explained by fare differential to an M or B fare. This was confirmed by a UA rep. for UA3441 ORD-HPN.

UA 893 3/9/12 SFO-ICN
1K
Z

Was offered buy-up to F prior to system merge for about $1,000. Declined. F cabin prior to check-in was less than half-full, I think F7 was availability.

At check-in, CO system offered me buy-up for around $2,200. Very much declined.

F went out with one seat available. I think a family of 4 either bought up or maybe employees/companions.

I guess CO puts a much higher premium on their Global First product.

Folks,

Please look at the title and read the first post in this thread. It clearly states this is a thread for posting TOD buy-up offers and not for discussion. There are numerous other threads where the subject is being discussed. Any posts removed were for being off topic.

This forum is large and active. It can often be difficult to find useful information quickly and it is more difficult when threads go off-topic. I hope this thread can stay a good resource for quickly gatheting facts about TOD buy-ups.

UA856 3/14 lax- iad 1K offered $109 on S fare at online check-in. Declined. After checking in, I was #1 on the wait list with 2 seats available. At departure I was #1 on the list with F full.

FYI at purchase I was offered buy ups in each direction @$520 which I presume was the difference between S and the cheapest F fare.

mherdeg Mar 16, 2012 6:54 pm

UA1704 SFO-EWR on an L fare. Checked in 17/20. Upgrade has been waitlisted with a RPU for a week; I am now #2 on departure-management upgrade list and am not convinced that the person who is #1 is also using miles or an instrument.

The flight is F3 A1 JN3 Z1 ZN1 P1 PN1 R0 RN0 IN0 I0 Y3 YN3 B0 M0 E0 U0 H0 HN0 Q0 V0 W0 S0 T0 L0 K0 G0 N0 XN0 X0.

I am offered an upgrade for $529, which seems a little high -- is that really the difference between the L fare I paid and an M fare?

UA841 Mar 16, 2012 7:35 pm

sfo-msy 3/16/12, 1p (or whatever gold is these days), V fare, $79 offer 23.5 hours in advance of flight. Passed. Olci said 10 people on list with 1 F seat remaining. Sitting with friends or I may have paid (for the ua/co pricing monitors).

Was offered UG on website at booking for $99.
Accepted.

4/28 UA862 HKG-SFO, B Fare.
Noticed PN availability when checking website a few days after booking. Called UA and asked for chance to pay for UG. Was told that buy up could not be offered over the phone, web only. Spoke to supervisor and was surprised to be offered UG for $0.
Accepted :)

March 28
UA 958 ORD-LHR
1K
Business J Fare
Checked in at exactly T-24 hours. Offered $559 buy up to First. Declined with 2 F seats available (that had been available for weeks). #1 on the upgrade waitlist (had a GPU outstanding for weeks that never cleared). Within 2 hours of check-in, both F seats are now booked. Still #1 on waitlist, but not likely to clear since no more F seats.

As an aside, had to call UA to confirm my upgrade to First for the return LHR-ORD flight, even though I had a GPU outstanding for some time. I just happened to check inventory on the flight one day and noticed an upgrade open up. I immediately called and was able to confirm the upgrade after the agent spoke to a supervisor. I believe this problem has been documented in other threads.

MEL-JFK Fare in L Class bouthg United AU website Feb 9
Phone UA USA got x2 Mileage Upgrade awards waitlisted for MEl-LAX and SFO-SYD-MEL Upgrgraded SFO-JFK vv with x2 Regionals - confirmed
Checked seating on United.com Travel Options - offered Upgrade Yto F from MEL-LAX for US$1220 took it paid card charged
Phone United US recredited 30K miles oneway
Online checking for return flight post merger - 24 hours before SFO-SYD flight -offered upgrade online from L to F for US$5731 - declined - no upgrade to C offered
2 hours later rechecked in to check seating - upgrade to F gone - offer of US$1720 upgrade from L to C paid and chose a seat in C

Onboard plane SFO-SYD- (flew from JFK so got printed boarding passes all the way through to MEL in NYC -) guy comes up and tell me I'm sitiitng in his aisle seat - calls over Maitre d'Cabine - Maitre d'Cabine says they were trying to fing me to give me my new boarding pass - 4x instead of 6x - so got my upgrade to F without paying for it Good on United - I'd just like the miles from this SFO-SYD flight credited!

3/19: DAY-ORD-HPN (DAY-ORD on CR2)
ORD-HPN UA 3444
1K with non-premier companion on same res.
3 F seats open
T fare
$99 per/person to F at check-in declined.

The $99 does not represent even 1/3 of the difference between the purchase price and an M/B/Y or F-class fare (update: it's actually about 1/8 of the difference). Before OLCI the upsell offer had been over $500.

Sometime between 12 and 6 hours before departure I went from #1 on the waitlist with 3 available to #1 with 0 available. 2 of the 3 newbies show up on the list as cleared.

Update: Got the last F seat at the gate (1 pax did not check in, as F was full with 5 checked in at T-30m). My companion was #1 on the list.

On a related note, the buy-up for the same route/fare class next Friday & Monday is $814 (HPN-ORD-DAY) and $784 (DAY-ORD-HPN). Both are the same fare, the same carriers and aircraft (S5 and G7 on E70s and CR7s), all with 5/6 open in F. The total comes to the difference between what I paid and a B fare (no M fare on this route).

Cuse44 Mar 18, 2012 2:40 pm

UA 1534 EWR-DFW

GS on a U fare. Buy-up in advance of check-in of $219 (difference to M fare).

Check in this morning, offered buy up of $99 with 54 eligible customers for an upgrade. Took the upgrade as I have to do work but the system CLEARLY isn't working right. :td::td:
