I see 3 PMUA domestic 767s that haven't flown in awhile. Working to track down the status.

bmvaughn Oct 30, 2011 8:37 pm

Looks like quite a few additions and removals scheduled for 2012. Adding 19 737-900 ERs, removing 14 735s, 5 752s. Adding 5 787s, removing 4+ 767-200 ERs, 1 747...

Okay... this is odd. Sitting on N570UA right now (about to head SEA-SFO UA0468) and there's GoGo WiFi. N593UA isn't around, and I'm too far away from an AS plane to be leeching its signal.

Will report back once inflight if I can connect.

Edit: Turns out it must have been bleed from another aircraft. The closest AS plane was 3 gates away, so not sure if that's what it was. On the plus side, we had Capt Flanagan!

Someone had a photo taken in the last 2 weeks of a 747 with United logos removed at the SFO MX base. Don't know the registration.

Would likely be 173 or 174

Yup. Took it on SFO-OGG, 10/21.

I'll see if any of my others shots produced a clear view of the registry.

Apparently, N542UA, N582UA, and N583UA are due to be retired. 5482 already has left. These are obviously leased birds.

5542 was the Oprah jet and in May got repainted into the crap livery, so one less of those around isn't a loss. 5482 is a battleship, while 5483 is in the new livery.

Weird. N582UA is showing as not leased (according to the FAA database). Hopefully she's just in for MX.

N583UA is leased (Wells Fargo)
N542UA is leased (US Bank)

N582UA & N542UA are now offered for lease (or sale) on Boeing's website (via a 3rd party).

Repainting or is it the one to leave the fleet?

Leaving the fleet. They aren't painting any more 744s this year and they wouldn't remove the logos only to send it to the paint shop.

Why remove it from the fleet right after converting the cabins?

  • N173 was converted over 3 years ago so; its not like it just came out of a re-fit.
  • It is a 20+ year old airframe
  • It is a leased plane (owned by Wells Fargo)..... Maybe the lease is up? I am sure UA sees it is better to walk away, then renew for another term (or just couldn't come up with favorable terms from WF?).@:-)

In addition, the airline is trying to cut capacity, so getting out of the lease at this time is an opportune moment. I don't like seeing 747s leave the fleet, but what can ya do. It's also why some of UA's 757s that are leased are being sent back as the leases expire.

If there was no merger, you'd likely see the leases continue.
