Ok, why aren't you interested in the car rental firms actually at LGW?
Ones which may be cheaper than the usual Avis/Hertz would be Europcar, Enterprise. I was about to recommend a UK independent firm called 1-car-1, but apparently they went into administration in March

Have a look at the HOLIDAY AUTOS website. They are very reliable brokers and nearly always beat the majors. www.holidayautos.com

I had used rental places near gatwick a couple times and got very good rates and a larger car but maybe 3-4 year old car ,
That was 5 years ago and I do not have their contact info anymore,
