LHR t3 to t5 issues on July 4 at 7:00 am

Several flts arrived at approx. the same time led to long queues waiting for the connecting bus, pax had to wait for two or three busses to board.
for the Fast Track security check two lanes were "officially" open, but one lane the scanner completely broke down, for the other the computer was inoperative for an extended period, causing long lines in the FT queue.
when they realize a snafu has occurred why couldn't they move FTs to a regular line?

You could have moved yourself to the other lane if that was faster.

I was close enough to the conveyor belt not to move; but the pax reaching the end of the FT lane should have been moved to a regular line.
Also why couldn't they have adjusted the ropes to make the regular lanei closest to FT an FT lane?
