I withdraw £100 at a time usually and the only time I've had £50's in my possession was a) when I sold a car for cash and b) I got some out to pay an electrician.

I frequently fly into DUS, en route to Essen, which I reach by train.
The smallest denomination Euro notes issued by the geldomat located right next to the Deutsche Bahn ticket machines are €20.
The rail fare to Essen is €9.20 - but the ticket machines will not accept €20 bills!

More precisely, the machine will not accept any notes that result in it paying over €10 in coin change. The ticket counter will sell you a ticket if you ask nicely (officially speaking they don't sell single tickets). And to print it, they use a common-or-garden laser printer!
Doesn't solve the problem of getting from the airport to the train station, of course; the transfer train is not free.

Transfer train is free if you have a rail OR air ticket arriving/departing from Dusseldorf airport OR if you have purchased a ticket for the viewing terraces OR if you are airport staff OR various other exemptions. Pretty much if you're not a vagrant and have a legitimate reason for riding the train, you can ride for free.

This seems like as good a place as any to share the ATM I found today - possibly London's most optimistic? It's a Travelex cash machine inside Westfield Stratford City.

When you press 'Other', you have to key in your choice in multiples of £20. I asked for £40, and got 2 x £10 and 1 x £20...
