I've had similar situations with my snowboard. Flying from GYD insistent that I needed to pay. A print out of the rules quickly solves it, though to be honest the English wording of the policy is clunky.
I did once email 48hours in advance to tell them I would be carrying a snowboard and got an anwlswer 3 days after flying simply telling me how much I would need to pay for it! So both wrong and late!
