When you get your new passport, you would log-on to GE web site and update your new pp number. You can then show up (without an appointment) at a GE location, they will verify that your new pp # matches what you entered into the system and paste a new CBP sticker on it.

Can you use the new passport before getting CBP verification? Obviously you won't have the sticker, but it's not like you need that if things go fine at the GE terminal.

Last time I went through ORD a month ago, before letting me exit the CBP officer took my passport and quickly glanced at the back to see if the sticker was posted, it was no problem.

GE is instant because it uses your existing passport. Just scan and go. NEXUS requires you to wait a few days for the card to get mailed from the facility in Vermont where they make them (for both Canadians and Americans). That said, I would guess that if you have had your eyes scanned, you can use NEXUS Air right away.

At YVR prior to leaving the immigration area, one must show, the kiosk receipt, the customs form AND the nexus card to the officer.

I've only used GE twice since I got it last summer, once at ORD and once at LAX. At ORD the CBP officer made the comment about how he liked it when they put the sticker on the back rather than inside the back cover. At LAX I handed the receipt inside the passport info page to the officer, but I don't think he looked at the sticker.

GE is definitely worth the $20/yr to avoid the line even if you only use it 2 or 3 times. ^

The majority of my port of entry is SFO but I have also gone through ORD and IAD. I have never had to show my passport on exit. They just take the receipt and welcome you home.

I used GE four times in 2010. My first time was at IAD, and the CBP officer looked at my passport and receipt, and then let me go. Second time was at SFO, where they just took the receipt. Third time was also at SFO. The officer looked at the receipt, passport, and then said "Welcome Home!" ^. Fourth time was at ORD, and they just took the receipt, and sent me on my way.

That's odd. YYZ has never asked for the card, unless the machine was down. Just takes the blue form and kiosk receipt, stamps BP with a NEXUS stamp and you are on your way.

At IAD, I got a smile a "welcome home" and "have a great rest of your trip sir." I was absolutely shocked at the pleasant behavior of the CBP guy.

Really amazed me when the guy at SFO said that to me. He was the most friendly CBP officer that I have ever met (except for the one at YEG that processed my NEXUS app. We spent about fifteen minutes talking about his old home (SFO) :)

I wish the CBP officers at YEG were like that. I've noticed that all CBP officers at Canadian airports are pretty rude. Never a "Have a great trip, Sir", or "Welcome Home".

In all of my trips using GE, no CBP agent has looked for my sticker. But even if YOU update your new pp info on the GE website, the "system" may still require a CBP agent to verify that it was entered correctly.

I'm always asked to show the sticker at ORD. Never at JFK or DFW or MIA, though increasingly they want to check the passport ID page to compare my name to the name on the receipt.

Question:

Back in his wild and crazy 20's, Mr Marmarmar was arrested (and convicted I'm pretty sure) for stealing a plum from a grocery store.

Will this 40-year-old blot on his record prevent him from obtaining GE? I know the application asks about criminal history...

Thanks.

After getting my new passport and stopping by the GE office at IAD, the agent indicated that I would not have been able to use GE with my new passport without him updating the system, even though I updated it online.

I was asked to show my sticker twice at ORD while giving them the receipt.

Your experience is 100% diametrically opposed to mine, as I have NEVER been asked to show anything. Not my PP, not my sticker, only the receipt.
And I'm "guessing" that I may pass thru ORD customs a couple more times a year than some others!! ;) :D
