I think this is likely the reason, the new expiry date is full 5 years instead of 5 years from the old expiry, if one's nexus expired while the renewal process continues. Given the covid 2 year benefit extension past old expiry date, I wasn't affected much while traveling.

Yes, in my extended family with ten NEXUS members in three states, renewed NEXUS cards with notice of interview waiver have always come from the enrollment center at which we originally interviewed. My theory is that renewal applications are processed by staff at your original enrollment center (or maybe the center at which you most recently interviewed), and that less busy centers (Soo, for example) typically process renewals faster than busy ones (e.g. Blaine, Fort Erie, Port Huron, Niagara Falls, Detroit, and Canadian airports). I would welcome more data on this, to see if it explains the large variation in renewal application processing times.

Processing (at least on the) Canadian side is processed at back office processing locations; there was a CBSA field guide years back on high level processing steps. Doesn't make sense to send a CBSA agent into the US to run a background check in ICES and FOSS when they have the same access anywhere else.

The "from" location in the NEXUS approval letter is similar to TTP cards having a return address in Washington DC or a letter from requiring more information for a US passport application coming from Sterling VA. It doesn't necessary mean it came from there.

If you have data showing that renewal processing times and interview waiver decisions are unrelated to which enrollment center you were originally, or most recently, interviewed at, please share.

Don't have that but some workings on CBSA NEXUS approval process for your reading pleasure:

ENF 29 Alternative Means of Examination Programs

Enrollment Centre officers do not have access to various databases that an applicant is searched against during the background screening process. The approval process takes place at back office location(s).

NEXUS renewal without interview - current experiences?

When I switched from GE to Nexus 5 years ago, I was approved without an interview (but was only informed of this a few days before my scheduled interview appointment).
Does anyone know what the situation is now (as in if they waive the interview they will only yet you know a few days before the appointment?)

Nobody has reported that happening.

#1283 had a similar experience (but this was Nexus renewal; mine was GE->Nexus; both were ~5 years ago)

Agree they did years ago (I posted about that in #1286). Still surprised they are not doing that now.

My data point:
Expiry: May 2023
Applied for renewal: May 20, 2022
Approved: July 8, 2022 (49 days)
No interview required. This is my second renewal with no interview needed.
Have not received card yet as just approved today
New expiry date on the system: May, 2028 (previous expiry date May 2023 + 5 years)

Great news! When you receive your new card, please let us know which enrollment center's name is on the letter and if that center was the one where you originally, or most recently, interviewed.

I can tell you now as the letter is in my account. It came from:
VANCOUVER ENROLLMENT CENTER
3211 Grant McConachie Way
Richmond, BC V7B1Y7
CA

This is not the center where I originally interviewed. I originally interviewed at the Urban Vancouver office in late 2012 which is now permanently closed and this is my second renewal with no interview needed.

This is great news. Hope it will be the same for us when I renew ours in a few weeks.

Great data point. Thank you! Hopefully many more of us will get similar treatment. I'm eager to hear from anyone else who has received an interview waiver for two consecutive renewals, and in those cases, which enrollment center name is on the approval letter.
