Before a transcontinental flight
Hi,
Are there any command pilots who fly intercontinental routes who could tell me what sort of things go on a few hours prior to an intercontinental flight (I'm talking about checking weather, weight and balance, etc.). I'm especially interested in who does what, and when. The reason for this is I am thinking about writing something about flying and want to get it right, especially during preflight planning stage.
Thanks in advance for any help with this or with help directing me to a source where I can find this sort of thing out.

You should look for a paperback book called "From the Flight Deck" by Bruce Campion-Smith: (Ian Allen, 1999) that depicts a actual airline trip from LGW to ATL in a BA 777, via photos, and written narrative. It covers all aspects of the flight, including all preflight tasks.

You might want to check the recent archives of Flying magazine.
Captain Les Abend flies 757/767s for AA and writes a monthly column called Jumpseat. He frequently flies transcons and I remember recent columns describing his transcon flights, sleep schedule, and even the crew meals.

You might also try posting your question on a forum at http://www.airliners.net. I get the impression more pilots hang out there than at FT.
