Wanted:Trip report from Capri

Currently booked for 5 nights there in brand new Marriott that opens 8/05. Had to use SkyChoice award for 2 BE seats into FCO. Want to make sure Capri is worth it. The little bit I have found via the search feature has been all over the board. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I would go to Sardinia which is far superior to Capri and with direct 35 minute flights from FCO to Olbia (Costa Esmeralda).

I just came back from there - great food, beaches, clear water with tons of watersport options, interior with nice villages, and some of the best hotels in Italy (but very expensive). Shopping and people watching (sheiks and celebs) in porto cervo is also excellent. Capri is overrun by day-trippers and as far as I know a bit of a zoo and completely over-developed. There was an article in the IHT on it last week. I must confess my knowledge on Capri is all second-hand as I have always managed to avoid it.

I visted Capri last September, yes I was a 'day tripper'.... I had a great day, we visited the blue grotto and went up the cable car, had lunch and then a swim in the sea later. The weather was great and I had an amazing day, wherever you decided to go enjoy your trip!

Cheers

Dont pay attention to others who havent been there.

We went to Capri in mid-March ( a less busy period, I admit) and enjoyed it immensely the place is beautiful and well wothing going to. I would suggest you stay overnight when all the day-trippers leave and then the place is a stark contrast to the days very quiet and peaceful.
In any event once you get out of the main squares there were very little in terms of crowds.
The finucular was closed for repairs but for the same fare they had litlle buses shuttling vistors up the hill.

Based on feedback on Cpari and my experience in Saridnia I would summarize: If you go to Capri you will enjoy it - I still would highly recommend Sardinia over Capri - and I think many Italians would second me on this.

Every couple years my family and I spend Palm Sunday week in Rome and Easter week in Sorrento... Piazza Tasso, the center of Sorrento, is surrounded by a number of enjoyable restaurants and trattorias, and is a great place to stroll. Capri is an easy boat trip from Sorrento's harbor and during our week's stay in Sorrento we usually travel to Capri a couple of times, but have never stayed overnight on the island. Capri ferries from Naples and Sorrento arrive at the port of Marina Grande. From Marina Grande, buses run up to Capri town and Anacapri. There is also the funicular which travels to Capri town.

Here's an intersting website... http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/home.html

We spent a week on Capri a few years ago, and it was fantastic -- a much different experience than day-tripping there. There's history (Tiberius' villa), the funicular, wonderful restaurants, swimming (esp. at Marina Piccola), long walks, and boat trips. And if all that bores you, you can day-trip to Pompeii. Don't miss lunch and a swim at the Lido del Faro: www.lidofaro.com/.

Thanks again to all for your comments. We are going and looking forward to our time on Capri. I will post a trip report after we return to try to provide more info for those interested in going.
