Thanks, KF, wonderful report. I was going to ask the same
question as Fliar, though. Do people spend a significant time
in their seats, or is there much rushing to the portholes and
oohing and aahing over the lucky few's shoulders?

If it's not too rude to ask, how much did this cost? And how is the service organised - is it business and economy? How do they decide who gets what seats- luck of the draw or can you preallocate?
Thanks!

You can choose from several categories (at different prices). Economy, business and first; and within economy and business - better or worse seating area (in terms of viewing). Within each category no idea how they allocate other than obviously keeping couples/families together. I have a suspicion that Qantas did the allocating - cant think of any reason why I'd manage to get a bulkhead other than my QF status.
Most people, other than those in the window and one seat out, are up out of their seats. Not sure whether its worth paying the extra for a good seat as there is good cooperation so everyone can see.

Perhaps I'm the only one, but I think it's a complete silly idea to waste so much money just to fly over Antarctica, when you can make a real trip for the same amount.

From here it costs much, much more to visit by sea (Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne are easy to get to but Ushuaia is not; and from what I have seen and been told cruises are more expensive than the flights). And as I mentioned it is a lot more uncomfortable with rough seas, small cabins/bunks, boredom, etc.
But of course to each their own.

That's one flight I'd love to take someday! In the meantime, I sure enjoyed your excellent report, Kiwi Flyer. ^ ^

Hi Kiwi Flyer
Looks like someone at airliners.net snapped you on takeoff! Bet you didn't realise that Malaysian 777 was so close behind

This summer, for the first time since the Erebus disaster, there is one charter flight from New Zealand on January 31st (also by Croydon Travel in conjunction with Mike Pero).
Perhaps this will be the re-start of annual Antarctic summer flights from New Zealand?
