Monkeying around in Gibraltar
This weekend sees me heading off to Gibraltar for a short break, out on Friday back on Sunday. I don’t have a whole lot of activities planned for this weekend, dinner on the Friday night, cable car up the rock on Saturday daytime, and a Tapas bar for Saturday night, so all in all a fairly relaxed trip.
This trip was booked during the BA holiday and flight sale in the middle of last year and it cost a total of £362 for economy flights and hotel. Given that the hotel generally runs around the £200 per night range this was extremely good value. Why Economy fights? Because these will give me the last 10 points I need in the transition year to get my two GUF1 vouchers. I always search the Trip Reports forum when planning a trip, it’s an incredibly valuable resource. Imagine my surprise when the last TR I could find was ages ago. I would have thought that Gibraltar would be a well trodden path for the members of FlyerTalk, but clearly not. it’s time to fill that void :) See you all at silly o’clock tomorrow morning! |

Well, I guess it wouldn’t be one of my trips unless something went wrong :D they failed to mention that little gem when I booked it. Oh well, beer o’clock it will be ;)

I really enjoy Gibraltar. There's a real sense of place.
Looking toward Jebel Musa, the southern Pillar of Hercules (from The Rock hotel.) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0d655eafbb.jpg |
You should be able to get a tour or a taxi to take you to the top of the rock, there are roads, you don't have to walk even if the cable car is down.
Some of the tour prices are crazy, but it shouldn't be more than about £30 to get to the top in a shared minibus and the walk *down* is fine :) |
Thanks @desthslam. And yes, gravity assisted on the way down works for me :D

Good morning from a pitch black Newcastle where I have already lost track of the day of the week, I’m not used to flying out on a Friday.
No surprises this morning, quickly though the airport with only a brief stop at secondary security for the usual iPad swab. The left hand escalator maintenance is still ongoing and it looks like it will be a little while yet. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...11e9c64d8.jpeg The bar11 refurb is also still underway but from a little snatched view of the area it seems they’re going a bit up market from the previous dowdy space. As new tradition dictates, I’m now ensconced in Aster and Thyme enjoying a glass of Castelnau courtesy of Priority Pass before I head down to the lounge. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ba14d0859.jpeg |
The main bar in departures is packed and rowdy, the Low Cost Carriers are going to have their hands full this morning unless all the lads crash and burn on boarding.
In contrast, the Lounge is a haven of peace, roughly 16 people in here at the moment. Because the post mix orange juice is nigh undrinkable, a little change to the trio. The cranberry is not great, but definitely an improvement! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...50c9ffa05.jpeg I also spotted the addition of some Gluten free Madeira cake situated beside the coffee machines https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d7c5f7f6b.jpeg They’re not bad, I may need to liberate a couple for the flight this morning :) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...df9f8f0e4.jpeg |
Just enough time for the sausage extravaganza. I appreciate that they know how to actually cook a sausage here, as opposed to the pale and insipid offerings elsewhere
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c76770b92.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9c53e1227.jpeg Our plane arrived a fair few minutes ago so I’m going to head off to the gate early this morning and see if there is a successful group 0 call |
I finally arrived at the gate around 35 minutes before boarding to find a few pre-boards and one of our fellow FTers in the queue. It was only a couple of minutes later that boarding commence so I think I can count that as group -1 :)
A quick chat to the flight deck whilst I headed to the facilities and the captain tells me we are scheduled for an on time departure, no slot delay. Surely not? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1881f5355.jpeg G-EUUJ this morning and I was last on board back in March 24 on the return from London to Newcastle. The flight crew seem chipper and chirpy, team up front were very pleasant and once I reached my seat all back of the bus I had a good chat to one of the crew looking after us back here. He is on his last flight for the week so happy vacation time for him. An absolutely jammed flight this morning so no seat block but luckily the chap next to me is slim! Next Stop: Heathrow in around an hours time. |
