Had a small ... when I saw 2.1% lager, but you made up for it with the JD! Enjoy GIB.

And we made it! We landed 10 minutes late and then it was a short walk into the terminal for a very perfunctory passport check.

Google maps was telling me it was a twenty minute walk to the hotel and given the sun was shining and the sky was blue that was an easy decision. Plus, how often do you get the opportunity to walk across the runway of an international airport?

And a few minutes later I arrived at my hotel for the next two nights, the Sunbourn Yacht

It is now rapidly approaching 6pm and it’s time to go find my restaurant choice for the evening which I freely admit that I chose due to the name and the somewhat disparate menu!

I didn’t get very far :) right outside the Yacht is O’Reilly’s bar where the thirst became uncontrollable and I’ve paused for a nice Estrella before moving on. €2.95 a pint, I need to relocate :D

Not so, you clearly have chicken on one half and chorizo on the other, what else were you expecting?

One of the crew asked me to tell him what it was like as it was the first time he had served one and that is exactly what I said to him after I showed him the photo :D

And to the restaurant, I may live to regret this, if I live :D

You get inspired by others and we get inspired by you. I would say this is a Win-Win-Win situation.

I eventually decided on the chilli paneer (medium) and the Szechuan rice. The paneer was a Newcastle medium hot, not a Birmingham medium hot, but it was very tasty, as was the chicken rice which was absolutely full of flavour.

I ordered both dishes without veg (of course) :) usually the paneer comes with peppers to add a splash of colour, and the rice usually comes with onion.

Both dishes were very very good. The entire place is reminiscent of the spit and sawdust curry houses I used to frequent in London thirty years ago. Fairly simple dishes done well.

Now I will add a proviso to my glowing recommendation … let’s see what tomorrow morning brings :D

The sizzling tikka starter that has just been delivered to the table behind me, it smells amazing, I have food envy :)

And the bill for tonight

It is time to finish up the Jack Rabbit Sauvignon Blanc and then find a night cap before heading to bed for an early night.

The weather in Gib is certainly looking better than in Luxembourg - but as discussed that also serves for gaining a last pair of GUF1s :D

I didn’t pass anything on the way back to the yacht that took my fancy and so I’m now ensconced in the Gastrobar on deck 3. There’s a DJ in the corner pumping out thumpy thumpy music, but happily the volume is such that I can let it wash over me and concentrate on the large Hennessy XO that has just appeared. And when I say large…. a standard single here is 50ml so that’s 1/7th of a bottle in that glass!! Errr… ooops?

Time to close down the night with a taste of the local blackstrap cove whisky

It is very potable, light in the nose, easy on the palate and with a decent amount of burn on the way down. I think I need to pick up a bottle or three to take home.

atcodave Feb 7, 2025 2:07 pm

A very JapesUK end to the evening, well done sir. Hoping the malt burning is the only burn you experience…….ooh err matron🔥

Can you send the chef down the A19 to Teesside? Rockliffe Lounge sausage offer is pale, insipid and I suspect has a high sawdust content…
