Gelateria Guidi Como
In Como, a gelato from Guidi is of course a must.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8df816b7ca.jpg Good as always. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3b3b0c44fd.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f3fe47085d.jpg |
The Kitchen Como
We didn't want to eat at the hotel again in the evening. I was very impressed by The Kitchen in 2021 and wanted to try it again.
The restaurant has a Michelin star and is located on the grounds of the Sheraton in a separate villa. Funnily enough, it always sparkles when we eat there. Like last time, I parked (probably semi-legally) near the door on the street. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9e743456fb.jpg The beautiful peacock picture was still hanging in the restaurant. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9d4ec617a2.jpg Mini bread. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4b733110a0.jpg Amuse bouche https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...902a9c7812.jpg In 2021 we still paid 65 for the vegetarian menu, those days are over. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d3462fc2ec.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b41bcb5636.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...33984ce23b.jpg We chose the carte blanche, which was a little more expensive at 170. In terms of value for money, it was also much better than at Passalacqua. A good end to the trip. |
65 eur for a Michelin dinner. And to think back then I purposely avoided Michelin and Gault-Millau restaurants because I didn't want to get roped in into another expensive hobby/habit... :D:D
Then again here in NL it got to the point with all the crazy prices that while expensive, Michelin dinner is barely more than a three-course dinner in a normal restaurant. |

Offeendum, thank you for this TR and all of your past TRs. We heavily considered Passalacqua due to the TA urging and decided to take a pass. Your review further cemented it is not a good fit for us.

I would be interested to know what the reasons for this are.

Two elements, the decor is not to my taste, and the cuisine is not in-line with their pricing. I would expect to be wowed with service and fantastic food at the prices they are commanding.

The End
So, that's it for the report. We went home. Because I've already written about value for money and overpriced things, here's a special treat to finish - a shelf at a rest stop in Switzerland:

Of course, if I didn't like the decor, I wouldn't book it either. When it comes to food, it's mainly a cost factor, but at Passalacqua the money runs through your fingers anyway. The overpriced food is almost the least of the problems. I'm curious to see where you end up and how you like it there.

With hesitation we ended up at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. We had a wonderful time, and much of it was due to the stunning weather, nice staff, and interesting clientele. The reason we chose the hotel was the location, which is the biggest plus of this hotel. Our suite was in good order, and did not showing any wear and tear, but they had reopened several weeks prior to our arrival and assume it was refreshed during the closure. If we were to return, we would not bother with a suite, but rather book one of the corner rooms overlooking the Lake and Villa Carlotta gardens. Was it worth the price we paid, no. Was the service polished, no. Was the food great, no. As you accurately stated "money runs through your fingers".
