2022: Travel Year in Review

Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is right around the corner, which means 2023 isn’t far behind. That means it’s time for the 2022 travel year in review thread!

While 2021 saw my flying rebound slightly, it was still all leisure flying. That changed in 2022 as I went back to flying regularly for work and Mrs. WS93 and I got married and embarked on a massive honeymoon adventure which included many new countries, airlines and aircraft.

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s 2022 stats as we head into 2023!

New Countries (5): Qatar, Maldives, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Greece
New Airports (14): AUS, SDF, DOH, MLE, AUH, AMS, ATH, JTR, VPS, DSI, CVG, CMH, MSP, JAN
New Airlines (6): JSX, Qatar, Trans Maldivian, Etihad, Aegean, Sky Express
New Planes (5): B737-MAX8, A350-1000, DHC-6-300, ATR72-600, B787-10

Shortest Flight: Seaplane: MLE-Westin Maldives, 70 Miles. Non-Seaplane: ATH-JTR, 136 Miles
Longest Flight: IAH-DOH, 8,040 Miles

Total Airports: 27
Total Flights: 87
Total Miles: 71,783 Miles

About 75% work, 25% fun.

Lots of overlap on the map.

I don't think any new airports, no new airlines.

72 flights, 21 total airports.

Mostly Delta, 12 United segments (messing up my DL Diamond status for next year)

Geez wakesetter93, why the early rush man!! LMAO 😮

Three Years of Pandemic, Three Years of Life that seem to have flew by in a flash.
Likewise to 2020 and 2021, still have not recovered to the Pre-Pandemic amounts of 175K a yr and perhaps might not ever will. ☹️
It's hard to rack up the miles without Transpacific flying and 2022 lacks a single TPAC flight in its entirety.
And at least 18 years since I've gone an entire calendar year without a Transpacific flight. 😨
Air Canada for the 2nd Year in a row was the Most Flown Carrier in a Given Year

Between the Canada PCR test, US Antigen Test, HK (ISO 15189 certified) PCR test requirements which one by one fell by the wayside, international travel finally started picking up before the Summer of Hell came to the forefront.
All in all, it was an unexpected year of travel among other facets of life. 😐

Short of writing tens of TR or coding thousands of photos which I don't have the time/patience/stamina for, I'll try to cover them here. 🙂

New Countries (0): Another Lost Year ☹️
New Airports (5) : YHZ, BRU, CHQ, TLL, YWG
New Airlines (1) : Air Canada Rouge
New Planes (2) : Boeing 737-8 MAX, Airbus 320-200NEO

Shortest Flight: HEL-TLL, 62 Miles
Longest Flight: HEL-SIN, 5763 Miles

Total Airports: 19
Total Flights: 45
Total Miles: 71,534 Miles

Most Memorable Travel and Non-Travel Experience
Ottawa, Ontario (Jan 2022)

*Now you are thinking, what's so special about this photo? 🤔
My original thought at the time was they couldn't pick a more recent photo of Trudeau and on the next corner over, funny enough there was a Big Ottawa sign (with a missing T) on Sparks Street.
Between the empty devoid Sparks Street with the Otawa sign and a young Justin Trudeau photo, my thought process was Ottawa were missing some Sparks. 😂😂
Oh Little did I know, this photo was taken 2.5 weeks before the convoy
😨

Québec City, Québec (Jan 2022)

*The Frozen Québec photos was one I coveted for ages, only thing required is persistence to stand outside when ambient temperature is -26C/-14F, Windchill -33C/-27F. 🥶🥶🥶
Along with your eye lashes are frozen with icicles due to condensation, ears stinging if exposed, camera battery dying in 15 mins and windshield fluid freezing all in short succession.
And the Québec-Lévis ferry took 40 Minutes because of Ice Jam 😂

Toronto, Ontario (Feb 2022)

*Some events can be pre-planned, other sorta happens on their own. 🤷🤷
Between trying to catch extra snooze prior to a client breakfast, and extra prep was airplane spotting.🙂
Photo taken here is AC 7283 Toronto Pearson - Tokyo Narita taking off

Cap-Rouge, Nova Scotia (Mar 2022)

*One of my oddball calls ever, let's go to the Maritimes in Early Spring
Hey, I had the whole place to myself basically
🙂

Vancouver, British Columbia (Apr 2022)

*Similar to the February photo, sometimes its all about luck.
By far the cutest photo of the year if not ever, Newborn Rabbit Kits on Easter Long Weekend
😍😍😍

Brussels, Belgium (May 2022)

*Again, not exactly the most inspiring photo ever taken, especially in Belgium Failgium
But what if I was doing this 🤷 Emoji with 😐 Face inside the fixture, when Prime Minister Boris Johnson, yes that Boris Johnson was debating about the Irish Backstop which seems like a millennium ago

Chania, Greece (May 2022)

*Perhaps the only sane trip of the year

Hong Kong (Summer 2022)

*One of the fixtures at a Local Mall commemorating Twenty-Fives Years of __________🤷🤷

Central, Hong Kong (Summer 2022)

*Welcome to Hong Kong, World's Greatest Potemkin City 🏙️
You've heard from the Leader, "Opportunity and timing, right here, right now in Hong Kong. This is the moment you have been waiting for. Go for it. Get in front, not behind."
☝️

Worldwide Web (Summer 2022)

*Courtesy of the State Department, HK gets "Level 4 - Do Not Travel" status, joining the club with some other fantastic states 😢😢

Star Ferry, Hong Kong (Summer 2022)

*Every single day feels stormier and stormier in HK, until the day you leave 😢

Tallinn, Estonia (August 2022)

*Between all the horrible events of 2022, Just remember the Biggest Murderer in the World is from the Far East, not Europe😔😔

Narva, Estonia (Aug 2022)

*Just a small swim across the river is Mother Russia after a 2.5 hr train ride surrounded by Russian Hotties 😮

Toronto, Ontario (Aug 2022)

*Toronto Pearson, the Worst Airport in the World of 2022 😡😡
Our guarantee is to leave you ill-satisfied after having your flight delayed or cancelled, lose your checked bag, long security line, and charge abhorrent airport landing and user fee.😠
Because Oh Canada! Now welcoming 500K more people a Year that wishes to pay into our Ponzi Scheme
😉

Vancouver, British Columbia (Oct 2022)

*An Ode to a Never-Ending Summer of the Pacific Northwest, sun-tanning on a Canadian Beach in Early October 😎😎

Winnipeg, Manitoba (Nov 2022)

*I was always taught "All Animals are Equal, but some animal are more equal than others" 🤔
Perhaps next line should be "Rights Good, Notwithstanding Better"
😆😆

Most Bone-Chilling Photo of the Year
Hong Kong (Summer 2022)

*Firmly Implement Chairman Xi's "Four Musts" 💡

My busiest flying year to date, dominated by work travel (80% or so). Due to the chaos in Europe this summer I decided to postpone long haul leisure to next year.

No of segments 129 +1 to come
No of airports 28 - 6 new (GOT, HAM, BER, OTP, DXB, RUH)
No of carriers 13 - 2 new (Emirates and Tarom)
No of aircraft 11 - 1 new (Airbus 318)
