LH Munich to NRT first class

This 11 hour flight was part of my RTW Star Aliance First class trip which I purchased in South Africa . Great price for a 39,000 mile trip which was under $4500! Arrived at Munich airport where there was a very long walk to my gate. For all of you familiar with the Munich airport you know that LH has many gates and there are many "terminals" that LH operates from, although you can walk easily between the terminals. I had to walk to terminal C and on the way stopped in the LH senator club. Fabulous food spread including pates, herrings, cheeses, breads, pretzels and sweedish meatballs. Full line of liquors, French champagne ( Moet if I recall ), and the most wonderful receptionist who could not do enough for me. No Internet access but many phone booths. Incidentally, for all of you mileage buffs out there, I decided to fly FRA-MUC-NRT instead of FRA-NRT for two reasons. The first is I wanted to try the A340 in first, and the second is that I was able to get more LH miles in my quest for Senator status.
Arrived at the gate where there was the most orderly boarding process I have seen in a long time. First and business class through one door. The first class section of the airbus was a 1-2-1 configuration. I had a solo seat 2K. There was only ONE other passenger and he had seat 1A. Seemed like a private jet. The seats on LH first are NOT sleeper suites, but rather sleeper seats, which where fantastic. Great amount of storage including a separate place for shoes, DVD player etc. Since I like flying alone on these long international flights I love these solo seats which mega storage space allocations. Kudos LH for a great seat. In the armrest on the left side of the seat, was a dining table AND a personal video player, so that unlike other airlines offering personal video players, passengers did not have to ask the FA when and sometimes if these devices were to be handed out. On the right hand side of the seat was the personal video player screen. Small but colors were great when the tapes were played.
No sooner had I arrived in my seat, than I was offered some bubbly and a plate of green and red peppers with cheese. I cannot hold my booze in flight ( possibly due to greater effect that alcohol has at 39,000 feet ) and had a diet coke. The service started IMMEDIATELY after takeoff. There was a purser and two FA for only two passengers. You can only imagine the pampering that I had. The purser came to my seat, put a fresh rose in a holder in the seat, and proceeded to offer me the wine of the day and the menu. Here is the MENU transcript:


HORS D'OEURVRE
Caviar with the traditional garnishes
Matjes Herring terrine and Matjes Herring Fillet with sweet and sour Cucumbers and dill sauce
Ballotine of duck and Bean Salad with Walnuts
Assorted Sushi
Kobachi featuring Soba Noodles with ****ake Mushrooms, egg, wasabi, and soy sauce.

SALAD
Frisee, Lollo Rosso, Radicchio and rucola with yellow and red Bell Pepper Julienne presented with Champagne Vinaigrette or Meaux Mustard Dressing. Bread, Rolls, Toast, and Buutter

Soup
Suimono

ENTREES
Fresh white Asparagus spears accented by Sauce Hollandaise offered with Black forest Ham, cooked Ham and Potatoes with Parsley
Pike Souffle and Lobster sauce with Crayfish, Basmati rice and Flageolet Beans
Beef Sukiyaki with Vegetables, Japanese Pickles and Rice
Bass with grated Radish cooked in Soy Sauce served with carrots, snow peas, ****ake mushrooms, soy beans, potatoes, japanese pickles and rice

CHEESE AND DESSERT
International Cheese. Livarot, fougeru, Tomme de Savoie, Roquefort and Ash Goat Cheese served with Grapes
Fresh Fruit
Cholcolate Mousse
Green Tea
Fine chocolates

SNACK
Selections include Salmon and Plum Onigri, Argentinean Roast Beef with fried Onions and Mozzarella with Tomatoes

BREAKFAST
Buffet
Freshly sqeezed Orange Juice
Fruit plate : pineapple, watermelon, mango, kiwi, and red currants
Yogurt, Musli, Cereal and fresh Milk
Bread, Rolls, Toast and Croissants, Danish Pastries and Muffins with Butter, diet margarine, preserves, and honey.
A variety of cold Breakfast specialties featuring turkey pastrami, bresaola ham, edam and bresso cream cheese
Japanese Breakfast specialties including a Japanese Omelette, steamed Fish Plate, cod Roe with chili, Seaweed in Soy Sauce, salsify, poached spinach and salter plum.

SOUP
Miso

ENTREES
Scrambled Eggs will be freshly prepared upon your request accompanies by your choice of Bacon or Chives
Pancake filled with Quark and Nuts enhanced by fruit chutney.
Pacific Cutlass Fish with eggplant, carrots, seaweed, soy beans and japanese rice with sesame.

OR LAST MINUTE BREAKFAST
Coffee or tea
freshly sqeezed orange juice
Croissants.

Champane was a 1990 Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle. Wine lists great as well.

The service was absolutely top notch. Bogner sweat shirts were handed out after take off. These blue sweats were great. I saved them for my daughters who love these amenities. The service was slow and very "classy". After dinner, two movies, ( ALI and a Japanes movie called WATERBOYS), and a nap, we only had an hour before MUC. Incidentally, the caviar was fantastic, and seconds and thirds were offered. I had the PIKE which was outrageous. Breakfast was just as good. IMHO, LH first class service is better than SQ . Hands down. I cant wait until my next flight from FRA-CPT next week. Until then

Did they still have the Spatsburgunder (German red wine that is quite good, and brave of LH to offer it)? You won't have an empty F cabin going to CPT (it fills up with off-duty LH pilots, even if there are only 2 revenue passengers). Too bad you can't visit the cockpit in-flight any more ... the views across Siberia are awesome on these Europe-Tokyo flights.
LH catering is quite good this year (particularly the fish), but LH uses a lower grade of caviar than CX. I do wish the Bogners had a little less advertising. They are nice but unacceptable for street use.

Glad you liked the pike, but (for curiosity's sake) would like to know how the white spargel dish worked out. Anyone reading here ever have it in-flight?

Wow, you had this great receptionist in Munich?!? You must be very lucky....

I had it on Swissair many years ago. It was similar (genuine Spargel which is much fatter than American white asparagus) served with ham and Bearnaise sauce. Served cold. Was good but not great (however I have never had great Spargel, even at Lucas Carton on Place de Madeleine, so maybe I just don't have the palate to rave about spargel).
The addition of boiled ham and potatoe is not the most promising presentation. I will say that LH has excellent fish dishes this year (other dishes are a notch down in quality).
