Twas' the flight before Christmas

Twas the night before Wednesday,
and all through the house Not a bag was packed, not even a duffle.
All the tickets were stowed in their envelope with care
In the hope that United would not cancel our flight there.
Then, at SFO what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A miniature CANCELED to DEN and eight delayed flights,
A helpful desk assistant, so lively and quick,
Had us bound to CMH, through IAD in a lick.

My mom's mental mileage meter went into overdrive
That would be more miles on which for us to thrive.
And more rapid than an eagle our flight took off
As the pilot shouted, "Welcome aboard" and all the crews' names.
And so up to the sky the plane soon flew With the cabin full of people and luggage, too.
Down from the sky we descended with a bounce;
The purser was dressed all in cotton, and his belly was small.
He announced all the canceled connections, one of them was ours,
And laying his finger aside of his nose, Then giving a nod up the Friendly Skies he rose.
But I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Thank you for choosing United, and to all a good flight!"

Now stuck in Dulles with an ice storm before us,
Let's get back to SFO, before there comes snow.
We had 20 minutes to get to an agent
but the line was long, if we waited our time soon would be spent.
Then my mom rushed to the gate,
Please can you take us or is it too late?
The agent her fingers, so lively and quick
Pranced over the keys as if it were a trick.
Where did you come from, we said SFO
And that's where you again want to go?
We know some may think it curious,
But about the miles we are serious

So through the cloudy skies they flew
With peaceful wings full of fuel
And it's said that we didn't care where we went
So long as we got a lot of miles for the money we spent.
Fourteen thousand, five hundred fourteen miles (14,514) added to our accounts we are told
And we didn't even have to hold.

Back at SFO just 13 hours after we began
Next week maybe we'll do it again.
We got in our car and sped off into the night:
"Many miles to all, and to all a good flight!"

T-wiz and I took advantage of those cheap UA SFO-CMH fares for this miles run. Ice storms were blanketing the country and it could have been a real mess, but we managed to get lucky and ended up with more miles than originally planned.

As he reports, we were first rerouted to IAD due to a cancellation. Our flight from there to CMH was cancelled and UA was going to put us up for the night, but we figured things probably weren't going to be any better in the morning. So, the agent thought we were crazy, but we quickly hopped the last flight of the night back to SFO. In all, we were in IAD for about 20 minutes.

We ended up with about 14,500 miles each for $127 and we still have some tickets left for cancelled flights, which I'm told we can get refunds on.

I thought it was a pretty good haul for one day's work, but T-wiz is hoping this was not only his first miles run, but his last. I tried to raise him right ... where did I go wrong?

I hope my son doesn't grow up like that!

Just kidding.
