My first trip on SQ first class
My family and I arrived at JFK at 6pm. We headed to the first class check-in counter. We had 1 first class ticket and 3 raffles class tickets. The attendant was quite nosy. She kept on telling me how good my father was for being able to provide us with 3 business class award tickets. She informed us that we were to use the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Lounge. It was meant only for first class passengers but I guess because we had one first class ticket and both my parents were solitaire Club members, she let us use it.
We had trouble locating the lounge. Finally we asked an American Express employee for directions. The lounge was very crowded. We had to settle for seats next to a toilet. I surveyed the lounge. There was a dining area, business area, game area and lounge area. My father actually wanted us to eat our dinner at the food court but was surprised to find a full dining service there. We ordered a full dinner.
I had New England Clam Chowder soup, roasted chicken with rice and a moose. Since the dining area was full, we had to eat at the lounge. It was terribly uncomfortable, as the table was so low down.
The toilet was also sucky. The service there was not up to expectations. The waitress did not sound professional. After my meal, I proceeded to the toilet. It was so sucky. There was a unisex toilet with only 4 cubicles. The cubical I went to even had a broken cold water tap. So I had to wash my hand was terribly hot water. Back in the lounge, I could not find any other magazine other then the Virgin Atlantic Inflight entertainment magazine. I also had to order all my drinks from the bar. There were no snacks available. I had to settle for drinks. I prefer those lounges that allow you to get your food and drinks yourself. Finally I found other magazines and newspapers to read from a place I did not search at first. I was delighted when there was an announcement that the virgin Atlantic flight was ready for boarding. The lounge became so empty. We then choose a better seat. One next to the giant window with the view of the Virgin Atlantic B747-400. On the table was a built in chess seat. My sister and I played chess happily until the announcement for our boarding came.
After boarding the plane, my father explained to the flight attendant that he wanted to exchange his seat with mine. The flight attendant said to me, Wow young man, you are sitting first class. I smiled back at him. After take off, Supper was served. I had caviar, some oriental soup, rice with fish and fresh fruits. I forgot what the desert was other than that there was ice cream and it tasted great. I loved the main course. It was a fillet fish. Nice taste.
After dinner, I watched a movie. The Wisemen pause feature proved very useful when I went to the toilet. Although there were a few glitches like delayed pictures. The sound came out but not the images. However after about 10 seconds it would fix itself. After the movie, I changed into the blue Givenchy pygramas. It was very comfortable. My bed was made while I was changing. I had a few hours rest before waking up for breakfast, The bed was rather comfortable and I was able to stretch our fully. However I do not think the seat control was very good. I could not control the food rest and seat separately. In order to moves my seat up; I had to adjust the footrest as well. The controls in raffles class are much better.
I had a bun for breakfast. It was a continental breakfast. So there was not much in the menu. My family in raffles class had the same breakfast as me. After breakfast, the plane landed for transit at Frankfurt.
I was the second the leave the plane. The attendant in the airport said to the person in front of me, First Class? Then head left to the Lufthansa Lounge. She also told the same thing to the people behind me but not to me. I guess she did not believe I was in first class. I waited for my family before proceeding to the Lufthansa Business Lounge.
The Lounge was rather big. There were even sweets. I had a couple of drinks and biscuits before proceeding again to the plane an hour later.
On the second leg, I had a more enjoyable time. The crew was friendlier to me. There were also only 6 other people in the cabin. I had my lunch one and a half-hour after take off. I was the only one having lunch at that time. I had satay as appetiser, another oriental soup, Thai curry chicken and rice, moose and fresh fruits. I enjoyed my dinner since the food was nice. After dinner and another movie, I changed into beige Givenchy pyjamas. I actually did not want my bed made. So I did not tell the crew to make my bed. However, they made my bed even without me asking. I visited my family before sleeping. They were fast asleep.
I slept comfortably for 4 hours. Once I woke up, I went to watch another movie. The crew sometimes came to me to chitchat. Everytime I went to the toilet, they would also come and greet me. Before landing, I had breakfast. I had caviar, beef noodle soup, fresh fruits and ice cream. I found that one of my knifes was not clean. I complained to the flight attendant. She apologised to me saying they cleaned using dishwashers and forgot to check. I accepted her apology. When I went to the toilet again, another flight attendant apologised to me.
The second leg was 11 hours. Shortly after breakfast, the plane landed. I wished the flight was longer since I enjoyed it so much. I would definitely fly SQ first Class again.

Hello, EyeBurn. Welcome aboard FlyerTalk. Fro m reading your report, you are lucky to become spoiled at a young age. But I do not mean "spoiled" in the negative sense of the word. Once you've flown the front cabin, getting used to being in the back is difficult and you have so much more flying yet to do. And to let you in on a secret, even we old guys become kids when we slip into those PJs and start playing with the movie controls...

Thanks Shareholder for your lovely response. My father has exactly the same problem. He travels every week on SQ J or P but during our holidays, we travel Y and he has the hardest time adjusting.

Thanks Shareholder for your lovely response. My father has exactly the same problem. He travels every week on SQ J or P but during our holidays, we travel Y and he has the hardest time adjusting.
