Trying to upgrade from PHL-SYD on UAL

I'll be traveling this weekend from Philly to Sydney on United. I am premier and my client booked the flight in Australia which doesn't allow upgrades. Any advice on how I might get an upgrade to business class. it's a long 14 hrs from LAX and my travelling companion is a bit claustrophobic. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't know anything about Australia not allowing upgrades... is that some local law?

Normally, you could use miles to upgrade unless it is a deeply discounted fare. In that case, you could pay the difference to an "H" or "M" fare and then use miles.

Good luck!
