Thank you very much for your excellent TR!

Back in the day I did quite a bit of hiking and backpacking in the Sierra Nevada mountains when I lived out on the central coast of California.

However, to be able to view Mt. Everest on a trek in Nepal is one of my dreams and I hope to be able to do this some day......

Thanks, jlemon:). Definitely worth making your dream a reality:).

Outstanding TR - hoping to follow in your footsteps soon! ^

May I ask what you shoot with?

Cheers, Quasiconvexity:). Just a Canon 5D3, a UWA zoom and a couple of primes for this trip.

I was thinking of your trip report which i had read before the horrible event that killed so many people.

Was that where you were?

We were in the Everest region, whereas the deaths were in Annapurna. The Annapurna circuit was one of the options I was considering for this trip though.

Daniel W great TR.

Been wanting to land at Lukla. Also go up to Base Camp One.

How did you prepare for trekking in altitudes ?

Thanks

Cheers, HMPS:). I live in Dubai which is hot and flat, so was hard to do specific training! I run every morning though so didn't take too long to adapt to the hills and thin air.

I stared at these pictures for a bit, just to imagine myself being there.

Thanks for taking me there! ^

Thanks, aSiAnRiCk:). Often hard to compose wide angle streetscape type shots, but was quite easy in the interesting chaos of Kathmandu.

Thank for an excellent trip report. What time of the year was this? I am hoping to make a similar journey soon and read that November through February are the best for clear conditions. Also, which tour company did you use?

Thanks, andreiz, the trip was just at the begining of October. I booked the trip through this company: www.intrepidtravel.com

This is the actual company that ran/organised the trip though: http://himalayanencounters.com/

Everest In Full Picture

Very belated as I'm behind... But fabulous tr. Thanks so much for sharing these amazing pictures. I got a bit nervous when you lost track of the group on Day 1 - esp since you had just arrived and lacked some sleep (despite the nap). And I'm surprised your leader hadn't been more concerned or upset about your not staying with the group.

Also your lodging had 2 beds - did you share a room with anyone or did you have the room to yourself? And I know there was a toilet but eat about shower or bath?

The food looked more western than I'd expect. Is that just because of the clientele? I was surprised to see so many omelettes, pancakes, and french fries. But I don't know Nepalese food well - I only had it once and found it similar to indian (aside from the pork).

DanielW Jan 12, 2015 5:03 am

Thanks, Michael:).

My leader did apologise profusely when he lost me, but I wasn't too worried though:).

I had my own room. There was a communal shower that you could use for minimal cost (~$3).

Momo dumplings are a Nepali staple. The food in general seemed to be quite different from India, I guess because they are Buddhist (i.e. not vegetarian). There was a bit of western influence too, as I'm guessing pizza is not traditional food:D.

Awesome trip report! I am actually thinking about going on the same 5 day trek to Namche Bazaar this coming April and this was perfect for giving me an idea of what it will be like! Do you mind if I PM you with some questions I have?

DanielW Jan 18, 2015 9:05 pm

Thanks, IndyHoosier, yes any questions please let me know.

Wonderful trip report, thank you so much for it! The photos are brilliant, and they take me right back to the early 1970s when I lived in Nepal. I was a professional trekking leader, and for a couple of years I was the GM of the Everest View which you visited. I also used to fly into Syangboche in a Pilatus Porter on an almost weekly basis, captained by the famous Emil Wick who unofficially taught me to fly on these trips. Believe me, landing at Lukla was a sedate affair compared to the cross-wind crazy experience of final approach into Syangboche, where as often as not, you had to bail out at the last minute with a left bank that took you screaming over the rooftops of Namche....

Thank you also for the pics of the Kathmandu Guest House, I spent many licentious nights in that place, it was a den of...well, fun...back in the hippy days ;)

Brilliant as usual

Thanks for this wonderful report.
I have only just started looking at some of your reports and I am very impressed.
Coincidentally just after reading this report a saw a short, 8 minutes, segment on National Geographic, that had a simliar journey and thought it interesting seeing a moving picture version of your report.

I am not sure I should post this here, since it's not about aviation, but you might enjoy this documentary, it was broadcast in 1977:

WOW!! What a cool TR. I love your photos and stories. Will def dig into your other TRs

Awesome, as usual (I know, I'm late). Thanks for posting.

Do you have any thoughts on the trek to Everest base camp? Thinking of planning this in a few years. Or is it better to do a shorter trek like the one you did?

Would have loved to go on to the EBC. It follows the same route we did, but trekking on for a few more days. It is ~2 weeks (vs. 5 days for this trek) though, so couldn't stretch my limited vacation time to do it. If you have the time though, it would be great to do.
