United to Dub

I'm sorry if this isn't content heavy as this is my first trip report.

27th July 2014
Depart: 11:00pm
Arrive: 9:50am

Duration: 5:50 hours

EWR is really empty for 10pm... Shops all closed early despite the fact that there were multiple flights between now and 1am..

A few planes arrive before we go.

Our routing will be EWR to BOS upto Maine and then across Newfoundland.

We passed over Boston about 30 minutes later.

Later at 12am the flight attendants came through with dinner. Whom weren't in a good mood.. One flight attendant managed to miss me and then when I asked if I could get the dinner she said "are you sure you want it?".

The dinner was like this:
http://healthygypsytraveller.blogspo...ummer.html?m=1

After this it was pretty much pitch black outside with no sign of any lights below despite being over Maine.

About 1 hour later the sun was coming up and I was woken up by a RUDE passenger who decided to open the window and wake everyone else at 1 in the morning!

After this I was beat and decided to just stay awake. About two hours later the flight attendants came around with a breakfast which I did not eat as I wasn't ready. I think it was just a biscuit and a rasberry yoghurt..

There really wasn't much that happened afterwards.

So we started our descent about 9:30am for an arrival of 9:50am into a cloudy Dublin. YAY

A picture of the cabin...

Overall rating: 6/10

The flight was alright I suppose. The timing of the flight wasn't too good as I got no sleep on this flight.. I would prefer a day flight that arrived into Dublin at night time. Grumpy flight attendants did not help this. I did enjoy the meal although the portion sizes were not particularly large.

Again I was really annoyed at how early the food court and shops closed in Terminal C.. There is no reason to be closing at 9pm.

No, it`s not boring. I didn`t comment because nothing really substantial came to my mind. Only things lie "nice Pictures" or "never fley this route", "never flew United" what were indeed boring. What surprised me was, that they closed all shops.

Something funny to the end: First I liked to write: "5,5 hours? Really?" Mr. Clever thought at this moment DUB = Dubai. Fortunally I read until the end and remembered that Dubai is DXB......

There is definitely a content to comment ratio

Keep up the travel and TR's - much appreciated.

Owen - thank you for sharing your experience and photos. Economy Class trip reports are rare on FlyerTalk and I would encourage you to submit your next trip and perhaps keep in mind a few ideas (potentially coming off as hypocrisy as I don't write TRs - no photography skills and somewhat cautious about sharing too much detail which would make it less interesting to others):

- Share more background (why were you traveling? why United? Was it a good fare? I hope so given that DL and EI fly much nicer planes on this route with AA probably being the worst with its now seasonal service on B752s with no seatback IFE)
- List the plane type (I think you were on a Boeing 757)
- Show a photo of your seat and describe its comfort (were you in Economy Plus or regular Economy)
- Take pictures of the food and comment on its quality (you did so for dinner)
- Talk about the IFE - what was the selection like?

Otherwise, this was a good TR. It's a shame the flight attendants were so rude.

Since you ask, it was not interesting and the photos were low quality. I've been trying to be good about "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything."

I don't think it was. But just as an FYI, I have a few trip reports that nobody has ever commented on. So it definitely happens.

One thing you mentioned that I wanted to comment on:

"About 1 hour later the sun was coming up and I was woken up by a RUDE passenger who decided to open the window and wake everyone else at 1 in the morning!"

There's always going to be tension on flights when those who want things just so don't get their way -- witness the recent dust ups over reclining. If you're a light sleeper, I recommend a good quality sleep mask. They're a little warm, but otherwise they work like a charm.

I wouldn't mind if the person had opened the window a tiny bit to look out but this passenger randomly opened the shutter out of the blue startling everyone. It was clear that most people were sleeping or at least trying to sleep so personally I don't see this behaviour as acceptable.

I don't go on night flights often so don't take sleep masks. I think I have one but never really use it!

I also had the reclining issue in America! The passenger ethics is so different there!! Here we would only recline our seats on a long night flight (I didn't recline my seat to Newark) and wouldn't really bother on a short flight were as I noticed that over there the seats were flung back as far as possible within moments of take off! This is not common here at all and I actually found it rude especially with the seatback tv. I don't mind the seat going back a bit but find it unacceptable that people feel the need to fling the seat all the way back on a 2 hour day flight.

Well at 18 I am not a business traveller. This is my first trip report and only my second long haul trip to America so I don't have experience with trip reports. I prefer to read trip reports but just decided on this instance to post my experience.

Thank you for the advice I will try and take this onboard.

Owen, at your age you are off to a great start. I agree with all of the positive comments above. I thrive on reading trip reports and have enjoyed your first one.

FWIW, several years ago I submitted a fairly lengthy trip report [UA first and Greece] without any pictures --- and to this day have had no comments from others though many folks read it. But later a travel magazine contacted me about that report and asked me to edit and provide pictures for a print issue so that revision was published, etc. And I was sent two copies of the magazine issue with my report in it.

Thanks for becoming part of this community.

Trust me, you've done a great job for your first TR. If I was on FT at 18, I would have written the most boring TR imaginable. It would go something like this:

- I hate connecting in CDG. Why is this airport such a nightmare?
- Oh look, this is the movie I watched on the plane
- This food is better than what my school cafeteria serves

Please do come back and share your next adventure.
