What kind of advance plans (visa, etc.) do you have to make to do an Amman stopover? I may have a business trip to the UAE next month and I'm thinking of booking RJ and doing a brief stopover to see the city. I've never been.
As mentioned in one of the above posts - you can get visa on arrival. The rules say you need to have USD 1000, flight tickets and hotel bookings in place (atleast for the Indians).
And yes, the first place to see in Jordan would be Petra, followed by the Dead Sea. If you have more days, you can take time to go around Amman or visit Jerash.

Presumably a credit card will do? I'm certainly not going to travel with USD$1000 in cash.

it's definitely not the rule for "western" passport holders. I dont even think the immigration guy asked me one question.
