Hey guys, thanks for the feedback!
I'm actually in Iceland right now and just used the time while we cant leave a village in the east due to weather conditions to upload some pics from our cool Ice cave tour yesterday: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater
I will be here until Tuesday and will hopefully be able to capture some shots from higher northern light activities!
Cheers
Chris

My only advice would be to not plan too much (though some places will obviously require meticulous planning). Have a broad geographic idea where you want to go and let your travels happen. Some of the best places I have been weren't places that I had initially thought I wanted to check out.
I had initially planned an 8 month RTW trip that took me over 5 years. I had a RTW ticket that I ended up throwing 3/4 away and just used one way flights/train/bus/bicycle/feet from there.
Have an awesome time.

8months to 5years is a big difference hehe
I actually extended this trip to 3 years now and will allow myself for 1 or 2 extra years if I get stuck somewhere but then I really need to get home and settle down! Unless I settle down on the way, haha

I've done lots of trips like this overland. In Iran, be sure to drop down to the interior as Tehran is not really all that much to see. I have gone overland from Tashkent to Paris over the route you picked (more or less) and it is very doable. I would also try taking the ferry from China to South Korea and then on to Japan. I think you could do this with minimal flights.

For someone who wants to hike & shoot: don't ignore the Western U.S. & Canada! There are certainly some good photography itins up in the far northeast U.S. and eastern Canada, but the west is definitely worth a couple weeks of your time.
I know you don't want to do this whole trip in the one-direction manner required by the major alliance RTW tickets, but it still might be worth looking into whether it makes sense to overlay an RTW ticket with some of your other travels.
How frequently do you intend to return to base during the trip? A Star Alliance carrier with generous stopover rules on regular awards might help you get back to FRA every now and then...

Hey! I will actually not have too many flights and usually save money by planning and booking in advance.
I will actually go to the East of Canada, check out this post and let me know what you think about my plan!

You're going to several war zones and several areas where tourism is rare and requires special visas. I suspect you're going to have to change your plans. Eastern Ukraine? Really?
You might want to read up on the US college students who were trekking in Iraq near the Iranian border (last year, I think).

Yes I want to go to areas where tourism is rare but I will avoid war zones as much as I can - you can not really tell which zones are no-go s in 3 years from now so I dont worry about the last part of my trip too much for now.
People get robbed and being held hostage everywhere, not just in Iraq - you might want t oread up on that too

^ Best trips I've ever taken started with either a bicycle and a map of hostels or a Eurrail pass and no plans.

Sri Lanka-Madagascar and Antarctica-Venezuela may be tough air hops. I'm sure Iran is rich in history but I'm not so sure I'd wanna go there. For financial reasons I'd likely book a framework of the inter-continental air hops (preferably changeable) and do the overlands as the part without the rigid schedule. RTW tickets will only indulge the Phineas Fogg impulses to a point.
