2012: What an epic year that was

As usual, I'm late to the 'year in review' thread... but it was definitely my best-ever travel year for both quantity and variety, so here goes.

BIS miles: 82,822 (16,764 in intl F / 46,990 in C & dom F / 6,516 in Prem Econ / 12,552 in Y)
Sectors: 57
Airports: 42 (20 new: YQB, PVG, KRN, BHX, COS, ULN, CAN, KWL, KMG, DIG, SGN, DAD, HPH, HAN, LPQ, VTE, RGN, MDL, HEH, BDL)
Airlines: (14, 5 new: CA, CZ, MU, VN, YH)
Countries: 32 (18 new: Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, Burma/Myanmar)
Aircraft: 26 (2 new: Fokker 100, A380)

Best flight: PVG-ZRH in LX F. Who cares that it was the old hard product, the food and service more than made up for it - the 50+yo female FAs in the F cabin had the most marvellous mix of extreme professionalism with real humour and warmth. Much better than NH F, which was almost too attentive and by-the-book to be truly relaxing.
Best hotel: Park Hyatt, Shanghai. Two nights there, upgraded to a Bund view room, represent the best value $70 credit card annual fee ever!
Most unique accommodation: Icehotel Sweden. Truly a bucket list experience.
Most unique flying experience: Getting in and out of NYC in the aftermath of Sandy. Getting there involved a forced overnight in Toronto, then rerouting to Hartford, CT and picking up a hire car to drive through the mayhem. As for getting out, I'll never forget leaving JFK to move to Australia a few days post-Sandy, and seeing Manhattan pitch black below midtown, despite the sparklingly clear night.
Most novel alternative to intercontinental flight: Driving 12,000 miles from London to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in a tiny car - you can read about it here.
Best photo op: Seeing the snow monkeys in their hot springs near Nagano in the Japanese alps.

So, without further ado, the actual flights:

So what will 2013 bring? A new FFP for one: goodbye AC Aeroplan, it's been a pretty good 10 years but, to be brutal, you've changed. Apparently we're just not good for each other any more. Here's hoping Asiana will help to fill the void - and that I can just get used to flying upfront a whole lot less.

If you spoke Japanese, you might think differently about the NH F crew. But, since you've probably flown F much more than me, do you generally prefer where the crew are minimally invasive, or where they amble often throughout the cabin?

So what will 2013 bring? A new FFP for one: goodbye AC Aeroplan, it's been a pretty good 10 years but, to be brutal, you've changed. Apparently we're just not good for each other any more. Here's hoping Asiana will help to fill the void - and that I can just get used to flying upfront a whole lot less.

I'm not complaining about the NH F crew, we felt very well looked after. (And before 2012, I'd never flown longhaul F before so I'm a newbie too.) It's just that you felt that they were so drilled and practised and terrified of missing a beat that it all became a bit unrelaxing - you almost didn't want to ask for something because you knew they would swing into action to make it happen, no matter how outrageous it was. We were in the middle seats, so I was served by the FA on one aisle while my partner was served by the other FA in the other aisle. When they delivered our dinners, they would burst forth through the galley curtain at the exact same moment, moving perfectly in step with each other, like synchronised swimmers. It's a feat of coordination, but all a bit over the top.

By contrast, the LX crew seemed to be incredibly professional but also real individuals - like each had been trained to use their initiative, like an extremely accomplished host in the familiarity of their own home.

I will say that the Krug served on NH beat any other champagne I've drunk in flight though, I feel hungry just thinking about it. Krug can almost be too much on the ground, but up in the air where palette and taste buds are deadened, Krug rules ^

My first round the world trip in 2012

I did my first round the world trip in 2012 (90 days on a Star Alliance RTW first class ticket) Check out my blog : www.toscanoworldtrip.blogspot.com . My next goal is to test out the Emirates A380 first suite with the shower (it better be great because ANA is a tough act to follow!)

I have had a relatively dismal year in air travel, with exactly 20 flights, a big chunk of the 20 being connections:

AF 1 long + 6 short = 7
CX 2 long + 0 short = 2
DL 3 long + 0 short = 3
IC 0 long + 2 short = 2
9W 0 long + 1 short = 1
KL 0 long + 1 short = 1
LX 2 long + 2 short = 4

Total : 8 long + 12 short = 20
