The Last Tarboosh (Fez Hat) Maker in Cairo
One of my favorite souvenirs to buy while traveling is a hat native to the country that I am in.
I wrote about (and posted pictures) my experience finding the last tarboosh maker in Cairo.

Wow.
My grandfather like many Egyptians wore a Tarboosh. However Nasser discouraged it as it was really imported by the Turks who ruled Egypt for hundreds of years.
Interesting for me that the military stopped wearing the tarboosh in 1950. My father used to sell sun shades to the army which would be put on the tarboosh for protection from the hot sun. But it must have been very hot wearing the tarboosh. No wonder they got rid of them.
Thanks for the article. Who on earth buy them today? I assume only tourists.

I read that the tarboosh is mainly bought by hotels for the bell hops and by older Egyptians. Tourists might buy them but this shop was not cheap and it was not in the tourist market or easy to find.
