Didn't that term arise from (racial) segregation?

Won't that get confusing on airlines that have a fleet with a mixture of 1, 2, 3 and 4 classes?

KF,

You bring up a good point. How about:

*First Class - Spectacular bed; attentive service; premium food
*Sleeper Class - Flat bed, giving ability to sleep; normal food; not necessarily luxury-oriented like first class, but functional and utilitarian
*Main Cabin - Lazy-boy style seat for comfort, like being in a living room; not the best food but decent enough to prevent you from going hungry (This is what I believe coach class should be - kind of like VS premium economy)
*Steerage; Roach Class - Reminds passengers they get what they pay for.

For anyone who has ever travelled by rail in Russia or the old SU countries, the designation of sleeper cars may be appropriate for air travel - 1st class, 2nd class, and Hard class.

Travelled on a train in Myanmar last year, took a peek into the 3rd class car, wooden benches, for a 9 hour overnight trip... yikes.
First class wasnt much better, hard seats with 90 degree seatbacks... not a good night's sleep I tell ya... I flew the return leg after that.

While we are discussing different names for classes, is there any explanation why in the US the official name for standard seating is Coach, while all the rest of the world call it Economy.

I think coach is more a long distance thing and bus is a more round about town sort of thing. I suspect when people in the USA say coach they are thinking of Greyhound which is a bit like National Express but slightly less good. I have never thought of coaches or buses as "economy". In Edinburgh, buses are more a practicality (or they were until they closed the city to tram works).

Back on topic, though, I noticed that First Scotrail had changed the name of their business class sections back to first class. Common sense prevails. Do any other rail operators call first class business class?
