The Lord Our God said Let There Be Light - and there was Light, and He saw that it was Good.
I cannot understand why anyone would want to shut out The Light that The Lord gave us - the better to behold His creations. I refuse to screen out the Light, whether at home or on an aeroplane. If it bothers people so much then they should make sure they fly during the hours of darkness. It is heresy to shut out the Light The Lord gave us. I will not let the Greed of Mammon dictate to me that I must shut out The Gift and The Love of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Shame on you.
Amen.

Good question. I guess I can see why people would request to have them drawn during certain times of the day when the sun is shining straight in their faces, but other than that, it's daytime and most people would expect to be awake.

If you're trying to watch a movie screen nearby to the one open window, the image can be virtually obliterated if the angle isn't right.

I assume that the person in the window seat can do what they like. I am always in a aisle seat. The only time I will even request that the shade be pulled is if the sun is shining drectly in my eyes. I have never been refused ... might that have something to do with how I ask?

1. Get a window seat yourself.
2. Buy eyeshades. They are only $1 or so, weigh nothing and do not occupy any space.
3. Having daylight has your body adjust to local time more easily.
4. What times should the shades be closed? Wheels up to Wheels down or in between meal service or ? Maybe this guy got a full nights sleep not the night before or just doesn't need that much sleep. Why are you imparting your needs for an absolute black room to sleep in onto others?

I like being able to look out of the window in my window seat. But I have certainly been pressured by FAs to close the shade so other people can see the movie. I don't like it, I feel rebellious and it seems like I should "own" the light in that space, but I usually "obey."
I like the announcements that say 'unless you are enjoying the view please close the windowshades'. If I have more than one window I'll close the ones forward of right beside my seat. I loathed flying in the dark. Earlier in the year my wife and I flew NRT-SIN all during daylight yet all the shades were closed

IME, such requests are conducted only on the ground and only in small planes whose engines are shut down. S340s and C/ERJs heat up in a hurry in an unrelenting sun on baking concrete. In such instances, those requests make sense. But once you're airborne, unless another passenger specifically asked me to lower the shade, I'd be inclined to leave it up. I love the view.
I don't know... I guess I see it in the same way as this:
Imagine you live on a street which is very quiet. All of your neighbours except for one don't play any music at all. However, one of your neighbours insists on playing their music loud. It disturbs everybody, but the neighbour is fully allowed to play loud music and does so. Now, you don't like loud music, but your neighbour tells you that if you don't like it, you can always sleep with earplugs.
There's nothing you can do to stop your neighbour from playing loud music, but you'd hope that he'd at least have some consideration and not play his loud music all the time.
I see it in the same way. If you're the one person who insists on keeping your shade open when everyone else has shut theirs for a reason, it's just not considerate.
