Longest flight on Great Circle Mapper

Hey,

I have an inquiry.

The longest I can find is something like LIM-BKK at about 12,455nm. I have been playing for quite a while. Anyone find anything longer?

Ah, I have little to do at 2:30 the week before exams.

I only get 10651 NM LIM-BKK, but the flight route is pretty incredible.

Check your units. It is 12257 mi and 10651 nm.

ETA: LIM-CGK is not longer at 9695nm but the route looks particularly entertaining.

stm-mdc: 12368 mi
(Santarém, PA, BR - Manado [Sam Ratulangi], Sulawesi Island, ID)

According to wikipedia, Earth's smaller circumference is 40,007.86 km. The maximum distance is therefore half of that, 12,429.9 miles or 10,801.3 nautical miles. The OP's number is larger than either of those two...

Still some way to go...

HTB.

I think we have a winner. I only managed to come up with

CHC - LERO: 12404 mi
Christchurch [Intl], NZ - Lugo (Castro de Rey) [Las Rozas], ES

On the other hand: ARI-SYX are not exactly on opposite ends of the globe (about 2 minutes NS and 15 minutes EW), so some longer distance might be possible on great circle mapper...

HTB.

Edited to add: For example:

0°0'0"S 0°0'0"E-0°0'0"N 180°0'01"E with 12451 mi. Does this qualify as a valid flight -- two aircraft carriers would come in handy...

Not seeing anything though with the airport database I used to calculate the others. Here's a list of all airports >12400 apart (my calculation is slightly off of GC's). I need to figure out how to calculate spheroid distance vs sphere distance.

True:

900'0"N 00'0"W - 8959'59"S 00'0"W gives only 12430 miles. But then gc is off as well, because my other itinerary on the equator (12451 miles) would have been shorter if flown via on of the poles.

Looong Flights

Patrick Smith once published an article about the longest conceivable flights, and uses the Great Circle Mapper as a tool...

But things that fly off carriers don't fly 12,451 miles without tanking a few times.
