Airports + stamps = NO WAY ??
I was trying to send postcards the other day--something I never do but made a promise before leaving--and nowhere at ORD could I find stamps. Checked in DFW on the way back and got the same response.
Is this common among US airports? I know for a fact that EU airports sell them.
I don't see how it could be a terrorism thing.

The mailbox thing could be a security problem (SEA had them but I believed there were sealed in 2001). Stamps at SEA were sold at a huge premium (something like $0.65-.75 in stamps/$). Most U.S. airports don't have post offices other than PIT which actually had one airside.

There's a stamp vending machine and mailbox in Terminal D at DFW, as I've used them before.
Here's what I found on ORD:

Mail Center / U.S. Post Office
The U.S. Post Office has a facility on the upper level of Terminal Two. Hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A stamp machine and mail slots are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 773-686-0119 for more information.

The diety of your choice only knows but I guess they feared letter bombs, mailed anthrax and the like. It does seem as if sanity has returned and mailboxes are once again available.

I haven't used it in a while, but PIT had a full-service US Post Office, and the web site indicates that it is still operational. I've mailed documents/packages, purchased stamps (at face value), purchased money orders, etc.

The stores that sell postcards do sometimes sell stamps. But it can be hit or miss. If they don't get a lot of requests, they probably stop carrying them. You might have to buy a whole book vs 1 or 2.

At IAD several of the ATM machines (all owned by Chevy Chase Bank) sell small sheets of stamps at face value. Your bank may still charge you a fee for using a "foreign" ATM - I'm a Chevy Chase Bank customer so there is no fee for me to use their ATMs.

Yeah, I was hitting the stores in the concourse. I the ever-changing postal rates being a factor in not carrying them at those shops, but I find it hard to believe that demand isn't higher where postcards are sold. They just stock up on 1 cent stamps as well--problem solved.
Also, landside locations wouldn't have helped in my situation. I'm on a standard 1hr layover. No way I'm going to hassle with Hawley's Angels again just to mail a postcard. Just would have been nice to cross of a to-do item in one shop.

MSP has postal services in several locations airside in the Lindbergh terminal. Map.
BNA has postal services on the baggage claim level.
DTW has a place to post outgoing mail, though I can't remember where at the moment. It seems, according to USPS.com, there is also a post office at DTW though I don't know about it, as I've never been outside the secure area.
Those are the three I've used several times.
