Thumbs down Expedia + Air India

I made a booking on Expedia for a trip to India for my dad and I finalized the payment and got my receipt… After that I went to check my itinerary and it wouldn’t show up and was alerted to call customer service.. So I call them and they tell me there is a problem with the ticket and that AI has canceled it and requested it be rebooked and I was told I’d receive a refund..

Now here’s the problem, Expedia says they can only refund me their fees, and I have to get the Airline charges from Air India.. I called AI and they said they need a ticket number which I don’t have, because they never issued me ticket.. Wouldn’t it be Expedia's responsibility to refund the money, since they are the ones that took the payment? I’ve been going back and forth from a number of reps and none of them knows anything.. But one rep was nice enough and tried contacting AI, but they didn’t get anyone…

Just 5 mins ago I get a call saying that I should see a refund in 72 hours since there was just a hold put on my account and it should fall off… I also got a email saying I’m being credited 19.99 from Expedia, but the problem is I was charged 24.99 and that remaining $5 is their fee.. Even though they were reluctant to give the $5 back, finally said they’ll refund but it will be done manually and will take 10 days..

I don't think I’ll bother with Expedia anytime in the future, and I will be seriously PO'd if I don’t get my money back..

Why not dispute the charge with the credit card company if it goes beyond a hold? That way you aren't on the hook for it and they can figure it out.

I've heard nothing but bad news regarding refunds with Orbitz/Expedia/Travelocity. It's the usual story - poorly trained reps who don't have any power to do anything, who will tell you to wait 10 days and hope that the computers sort everything out. My advice is to stop calling, wait the 72 hours, and if you don't get what you're looking for, call the credit card company and dispute the charges. That's what we pay credit card companies for.

I’d like to rebook the flight, but I’m afraid AI will end up canceling the ticket and I’d be out another 1200 bucks..

Update

Expedia credited back their charges and Air India has not.. I talked to Expedia and they said AI was not authorized to take payment until the tickets were issued So I called up my bank since I used my debit, they said they are going to take off the hold, and if AI actually goes ahead and charges me, I will have to call back dispute the charges.. Hopefully AI knows better than to charge me..

as someone currently dealing with the monster that is AI, I'll tell you, don't count on it. The company sort of does what it wants and uses it's service reps and long hold times to create a communication barrier.

You'd be better off trying to drive your car to India.
