Hey Martin,
We foot the bill when we TC... not the company DUH! I'll use the you are so fond of...

That was the point of this thread. The company pays for my husband's flight.... as long as it is never more than they would pay to fly him home. Generally it's cheaper than flying home to AZ (in the original post) in the case of SMdA it was half the cost of going home and to the next engagement.

The company doesn't pay for the hotel or any other expenses while he is TC - never heard of a company that does. The whole point before you trolled in was to find out other interesting inexpensive places to TC from - because we pick up the tab. We also pay for all of my expenses out of pocket while he is onsite (flights, meals etc).

And by the way what do YOU do that you are so free to post on FT on a workday? Hmm?? Who are you scamming while you are sitting at your desk? Or are you one of the retired who like to post about the good old days while you were working and what slackers everyone is now?

Are we living the life of Riley? You bet! We have a blast both onsite and during the TC weeks. I handle all of the non-work issues (handling receipts, booking travel, running errands) so the minute he is done for the day he is free to explore. I also do all of the 'homework' for what ever location we are going to so I know where to stay, where to eat and what to see while we are there. One of the best resources is FT

But what do we do about the potential wife who wants to grab a windfall off the corporation by having him TC in places where she can live the life of Riley

Those are nice places. How 'bout downtown Detroit?

Nope. If they are not productive at work or home, then they should go to a re-education camp, or be fired.

Just call me T-Rex!

TC'ing is a scam. Just remember, nobody knows you are goofing off before you do. So modulate yourselves accordingly and you will never get caught or exposed The scam lives on!

Cheers,

Actually, I am just back a week now from a 5-week gig in Angola. I'm slacking big time right now, when I should be out marketing. I'm planning one poker all-nighter at Coushatta in Louisiana, then back to Africa for me. But hey, I'm self-employed, so I can afford to pay myself when I am goofing off. Or am I not paying myself when I am goofing off? Huh?

TC'ing unfortunately is abused by many. Ms. Martinis at 8 is an IT manager and the stories I hear are hilarious

But for many, like sales professionals, they were working from home long before the internet, so I prefer to call this type of work decentralized work. In fact for TC'ing, in certain jobs, the concept of centralized planning and decentralized execution can work very well, and there may be no other way. But for you slackers and scammers out there, I am on to you!

I'm self-employed, I have been for about 14 years now. Niche technical specialty. And believe me, nobody knows I am goofing off before I do!

Cheers,

M8

Then I am sincerely disappointed.

See other posts for my personal background. Now off to that tauromaquia school for you! And report back here with your experiences

Cheers,

M8

P.S. I'm off to see Bourne Ultimatum.

M8

Alcohol/fast food/ etc are also abused by many and my wife is a General Manager, the stories I hear from her about on site workers are equally hilarious

and generalizations are also hilarius

finally, if an IT employee can't work unsupervised.....or largely unsupervised.....he/she should be fired immediately, its about adults with certain level of education/skills that are expected to earn their $ not about babysitting

I've employed many people who could not be termed "self starters", that required much supervision, but were nevertheless able to produce work that was outstanding in both quality and quantity. Wouldn't trade them for anything. The trick, as a manager, is knowing who can work unsupervised and who cannot, and deploy them accordingly.

Yes, I would say the above is true. Amongst my clients I also here the complaints about the slackers who TC. Some managers have told me they wish their companies would reverse some of these policies. Probably in many companies it has gone too far.

See, I think that there is almost more chance to goof off in the office than without. It seems to me that you are suggesting that adults need to be babysat while in the office, not supervised.

I once worked with a girl that seemed to disappear for 6 hours out of an 8 hour day... She is still working there. It's seems impossible for her to get fired due to several reasons. She supposedly has been openly racist and still has not been fired. I digress on this story... I don't know what I was going for.

Well for those who TC from somewhere other than home - regardless of if you are slackers or not (since that was NOT the point of this thread) where is your favorite place that you have TC'd from so far? and your least favorite.

Are there any of you who have given up "home" completely and live entirely on the road? We've considered this - and after the next 2 month or so stint of on site engagements might just do so.

bzbdewd I'd love to be able to do what you do. I also handle all my husband's travel arrangements, expense reports etc. so he can spend mroe time with us when he is home. He is on the road 2-3 weeks a month and works out of the house the rest of the time. Unfortunately we have these pesky children. I've contemplated home-schooling them so we could travel more but beyond school they have Girl Scouts and swimming and friends and so I must wait until they flee the nest. DH has telecommuted from various places though while we visited family or other-wise traveled. He deals a lot with clients in Asia and Europe so often he has to work early in the morning or late at night with blocks of time free during the day. He works an insane number of hours, I see it with my own eyes, he is definitely not a slacker telecommuter. His company is headquartered someplace expensive and without a lot of airport options, so it is much cheaper for the company for him to live here and fly out of the many LA area airports.

Wirelessly posted (My IV to the Net: BlackBerry7250/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Hrmmm, since the thread has been taken OT by a certain someone... I will add this.

My normal commute is 30 minutes. Today (a day in the office) I just spent 2 hrs in the car getting to work. Traffic jam, with everyone going about 10mph.

So 1.5 hrs wasted. Now if I had been working from home I would have been doing some work for not only that 1.5 hours but also for the normal 30 minute commute time. So my employer would have gotten an extra 2 hrs worth of work out of me. Tsk, tsk, too bad.

And oddly enough if you look at my location, I am pretty close to downtown Detroit.

My most favorite place would be on the water, preferably on a yacht. Reasoning, I find the water and related sounds to be very relaxing. Although I have yet to do that.

My least favorite place, at a family members house. I've done this twice, at the start of a vacation (because of cheaper airfare).
As others have stated it is tough when you work from home (or someone else's home) sometimes because family (or friends) assume that you can come and go as you please when that is not always the case.

I would be willing to give up home completely (for a yacht), although mrs. infinityplusone still needs to be in the office for her job.

Cool! We've actually looked at a couple of liveaboards - but the problem is that we're still rarely "home" even if home was on the water (80% onsite travel)... but it sure is tempting! Of course after seeing how much trouble a regular house can get into when left unattended I'd really be afraid to see what a boat might do! Probably come home to find it sunk

Vicki - my DH did that also for a couple of years - 100% travel & home on the weekends with a previous employer. That was prior to us getting together. We don't have kids (just a cat that goes to Grandpa's!) so it's easy for us to pull up and go. Believe me I count myself lucky that we are able to do this.
