Question Merging itineries?

First time post! I hope this isn't too obvious a question...

My folks are about to fly from PDX (USA) to YVR (Canada) to LGW(UK). The two legs were booked seperately, so they are two seperate itineraries, meaning they're not linked and they'd have to collect and re-check their baggage. Is there some way to get the itineraries 'merged' into one, so the baggage can be checked from PDX to LGW ? Or does it need to be re-checked for customs anyway, making this pointless?

Can they have this done when they check in or do we need to call one of the two airlines?

Thanks!

Pete

Welcome!

Your best bet is if the two airlines involved have what's called an 'interline' agreement - basically, an agreement to push the luggage along like you want. If they do, you should be alright, ask them to send the luggage through to the final destination when you check in. If not, you MIGHT be able to get it through, but not likely.

Good luck!

healdp, welcome to FlyerTalk. The answer might also turn on the terms of the different tickets. They may be "combinable" for baggage checking purposes or not, depending on conditions of the separate tickets. One key way is to check in advance with the carrier who will fly from PDX to YVR and see if they will accept an interline based on the other ticket.
