London-BRU/flights
Are there lots of cheap last minute flights between Heathrow or Gatwick into Brussels or Frankfurt?
We're flying JFK to CPT with a stop and change of planes in London. However we'd like to make a stop and spend some days in either Brussels or Frankfurt. The airline will let us make a stop in London so that means we have to purchase our own tickets to Brussels or Frankfurt. We spent some time in London in February and it was too expensive.

You might check into the Eurostar trains between London and Brussels.
Know that the UK taxes to be paid on your air ticket will increase with your London stopover vs. an onward connection within 24 hours.

Why BRU or FRA? Because LON is too expensive and you want to break the journey and go SOMEWHERE, or because you have a reason to go there (such as family or friends)?
If you're just looking for somewhere to break the journey there are better places, both in the UK and on the Continent (other places in the UK are not as expensive as London). Frankfurt really offers very few attractions (it's a big ugly financial centre) - though there are some nice towns nearby. Heidelberg is the one that seems to attract the largest number of tourists, there are other towns that are probably nicer but just not as well known.
As for cheap flights - "cheap" and "last minute" are two things that don't generally go together in Europe. There is a certain contingent of cheap seats on every flight, and once they're gone they're gone unless the airline decides to release some more as part of a seat sale. If you go across to the budget travel forum you should find information about web sites that list cheap flights - www.skyscanner.net is one I've heard bandied about. There are some LCC flights from LGW (none from LHR AFAIK), but the main airport for cheap flights is STN. For getting to the Frankfurt area you should also check out CGN and HHN.

If you want cheap and are flexible enough, you can fly LCY-ANR (Antwerp) via VLM for cheaper than Eurostar. A friend of mine paid 100GBP all in. ANR to Brussels will be a little further than BRU, but still within the hour - or you could visit Antwerp instead.
