Flat Bed vs. Recliner
Am I the only one who can sleep better in a recliner (AZ old seat, UA biz, DL biz, AA 763 Biz) seat than on a flat bed (BA Club, NW WBC) seat. I don't know whether its my height and build (6'1, 2xx lbs.). But I have never had a problem snoozing for hours, sometimes when I wasn't even tired, once I recline a recliner seat, but the minute I get onto a flat bed, even the complete flat BA style flat bad, I just toss and turn for hours and then have to start playing with the IFE system.

I hardly if ever can sleep on planes no matter how long the flight. I find for sitting, reading and watching IFE the reclining seats are more comfortable that the flat seats when used in the seating positions.

I agree I sleep much better in the QF Sky Bed than I do in the BA flat bed. I think it is because I am tall and the flat beds seem to be to short. But I would take any sort or Business seat over whY seats

I can't sleep on the LH new C for sh*t. I prefer UA C. VS/NZ/SA/BA (NCW, haven't tried NGCW) is pretty damn nice though.

As a side sleeper, I can't get comforatable enough in a reclining type seat to sleep. I particularly hate the reclining seats I've been in which the seatback doesn't come forward enough to sit upright, forcing you into a slight reclining position whether comfortable or not.
This site has some interesting discussions about sleep positions, etc., as well as good information about types of premium seats for many carriers: http://www.flatseats.com/

I flew on AZ recently and there was the slim chance that I'd get a seat on one of their revamped planes (with angled flat seat), oh how I dreaded the prospect, Thankfully, this never came to pass. And although the seat was a little too firm around the lumbar region I slept soundly throughout, even through the constant turbulance. In contrast, my experience on ANA (angled flat) was rather painful, and my sciatica had gotten worse by the time I flew AZ.
I loved my experiences on UA in Business and on bmi. Unfortunately with bmi, they are taking out their lovely recliners quite soon and replacing them with angled flat beds
The upshot is that the old recliners will be moved to premium economy. There'll be a drastic loss of recline (there was even a manual over ride system that allowed you to make these chairs go almost completely flat), but I'd happily sit in premium economy over Business any day (even though the onboard cook provides some of the best catering in C).
