A sense of place

If a site, historic site, architectural wonder, destination, etc. wishes to NOT be seen as a "toursit trap," but wishes to remain viable, how do some of you feel about how it should be done appropriately?

How can 'a sense of place' or 'a sense of time (historical time/era) be communicated while visiting? Or how can visitors participate? That is without 'ruining' the experience and place?

I would be interested in serious comments and suggestions.

Thank you.

It might be easier to respond if an ideal (non-trap-like) tourist destination were identified....

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch.

But, according to the website I found it, this is second to a town in Thailand with an even longer name. Are you ready for this?

Add Swedish, and it is a mega tourist trap (or an Ikea).
Add Finnish, and it is a super mega tourist trap (or they sell vodka too).
