A sense of place

If a site, historic site, architectural wonder, destination, etc. wishes to NOT be seen as a "toursit trap," but wishes to remain viable, how do some of you feel about how it should be done appropriately?

How can 'a sense of place' or 'a sense of time (historical time/era) be communicated while visiting? Or how can visitors participate? That is without 'ruining' the experience and place?

I would be interested in serious comments and suggestions.

Thank you.
