Cockpit Controls

In commercial aircraft(747, 777, A340, etc) are all the controls controlled by the pilots hands or are some of the controls controlled by the pilots feet like in the smaller private planes?

The Airbusessss have a side stick, while the Boeing/Canadair/MD-11/Embraer/pretty much everything else has a traditional yoke coming up from the floor. Just about anything that flies has rudder pedals, and the big planes use a "tiller" to steer the nosewheel(s) for taxiing.
Is that what you were getting at?

The big planes have rudders too, so yes, you gotta use your feet in the big jets. However, larger aircraft are equipped with yaw dampers (or dampeners) which in their own way, do a good bit of the rudder work for you.

Reckon they should all have pedals, especially if there're only two engines.

It's a yaw damper, and they provide stability and minimize dutch roll. They don't take over rudder work for you. Very rarely do you use much rudder in a jet except for takeoff and landing (you don't want the yaw damper on during takeoff and landing since it will apply pressure not allowing you to effectively steer)

The planes with one, three and four engines all have rudder pedals. So do the ones with no engines and the one with 6 engines.

Do the big boys have toe brakes as well? I would imagine they do but having flown a three or four holer, I'm just guessing. I imagine the airlines would prefer you NOT use differential braking as a replacement for the tiller.

Yes they have toe brakes. Differential braking can be used, but not nearly as much as a general aviation aircraft

Depends on the airplane. It's on all the time on the DC9.

You're right, on some aircraft there are limitations regarding the yaw damper....EMB is not below 500ft on takeoff, or below 100ft on landing...Other aircraft are different
