The countries in which I have driven a motor vehicle — usually either a car, van or truck — include:
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Panama
  • Uruguay
  • Malta
  • Cyprus
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • France
  • Austria
  • Slovenia
  • Croatia
  • Germany
  • Italy
I have driven in vehicles equipped with a standard manual transmission in every country on my list, as I prefer driving vehicles with a stick-shift. However, I have also driven vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission in the United States and Canada.

Only UAE, Qatar, and Portugal. I prefer to be driven and, in some places I like to or have to travel (namely, Saudi Arabia and India and, to a lesser extent, Turkey), it would be insane for a westerner to drive in my opinion.

I hope to rent a car and drive through Malaysia on my next trip. . .

I don't see many mentions of South America. Are there hassles renting there?

I haven't driven in many places, but the two most memorable are Malta (where a guide informed us on the airport shuttle that the Maltese "drive on the leftish side of the road" -- truer words were never spoken! Yikes!) and Tunisia (which had apparently just changed its law about who gets the right of way in a roundabout, resulting in some very impressive chaos and turning intersections into high-velocity games of chicken).

Oh, and if you drive in Tunisia, for heaven's sake, spring for the air conditioning even if it's an extra $100 a day. "How bad could it be?" we asked ourselves. Uh, pretty bad.

These look like bad fake IDs.

I still sometimes try to use mine (valid for one year) as photo ID, especially when I'm asked for a "driver's license". It's really amusing when the person doesn't even bat an eye. I'm all set for a big "What the $#%#% is that?" reaction, and... nothing

Being a big wimp, I still haven't used it at a TSA checkpoint.

True. Fortunately, the marriage certificate I also acquired there looks more professional, at least good enough for everything we've needed it for so far.
